Past Times for Children Series Announces classes
The Historical Society of Carroll County is proud to announce the new classes in the Past Times for Children Series.This program is designed with kids ages 4 to 7 in mind. The classes are every third Saturday of the month from 10 am to 11:15 am. This program follows the Carroll County Public School weather cancellation policy. When school activities are cancelled, so are we.
Classes are $6 a piece or if you register for 6 or more, your child will become a Time Traveler. They will receive a Traveler's Pass that they will bring to all classes, get stamped, receive a special prize and classes for them, will only cost $5 a piece.

February 16 Grooming in the 1800's - already held
March 16 The Traveling Salesman
The arrival of a traveling salesman- who brought news, gossip, and wares for the families- was an exciting event for the farmers during the 1800's. Children will learn about the traveling salesman through stories, games and a craft.
April 20 Mills- A Big part of the Community
There were many mills in this area. The most popular would have been the grist mill that would have ground the wheat into flour. Children will experience the mill and how it works from the book The Little Red Hen. They will create a wheat art project.
May 18 One Room Schoolhouses
Children will learn what it was like to attend school in a one room schoolhouse. They will "visit" this time period through dramatic play, stories, songs, and various activities.
June 15 Schoolyard Games
Students will learn what types of games children played in the 1800's. They will play, sing, read, and create a craft about this topic.
July 20 Sports played in the 1800's
Children will learn what type of sports were played in the 1800's and will try to play some of these games themselves. Songs, stories, and activities will also be included.
August 17 Barn Dances/Helping a Neighbor
Neighbors would help each other in building barns, homes and stores. After the hard work was done, they would have a dance. This was a great social activity. The children will help each other with a building project and then experience the barn dancing event.
September 21 Food and Canning
Many farmers canned their vegetables so they would last. The children will experience this through food demos, singing, stories and an activity.
October 19 General Store
Visiting or purchasing goods at a General Store was sometimes a necessity. The students will see what the store looked like and what it sold. They will do this through dramatic play, songs and stories. They will also make a craft to take home.
November 16 Living in Towns
Living in a town instead of on a farm is a very different experience. The children will learn what it was like to live in a town through play, songs, stories and activities.
December 21 Doctors and Medicine
In this class, the children will learn about having a doctor visit them at home and how their treatments are different from the treatments we have now. They will learn about this through dramatic play, books, songs and activities.
