Coaching Philosophy with Westminster's Jackie Stevens

Westminster High School's girls lacrosse coach Jackie Stevens said her athletes are like family.

Jackie Chase Stevens has been coaching field hockey and lacrosse for the last 10 years, seven of which were in Harford County. For the past three years, however, she has worked at Westminster High School, and led the women's lacrosse team to the state championships. She talked with Patch about her unique philosophy on how to inspire student athletes.

Why do you coach?

I coach because of my love and passion  for the game, and more importantly, I enjoy being around my athletes.   I enjoy having the opportunity to be both a teacher and coach to many of my players. I want the opportunity to make a difference in my athlete’s lives. A parent once said something that sums up the main reason I coach: “You mean so much to her and have given her so much in life. She loves you. Her life and her lacrosse experience was much fuller because of you.”

3. What do you try to impart on your athletes? What do you want them to get out of you as a coach?

I want my athletes to grow and develop as individuals.  I teach health at Westminster and everything I teach has to do with “life lessons.” I teach them how to play but I also take the time to teach them how to act off the field.  Winning is important, especially at the varsity level, but so is helping them to enjoy themselves and to have fun.  My teams are very close, we are like a family.  There is a lot of team bonding among the athletes and myself.

4. What is the best part of coaching and what is the worst part?

The best part about coaching is establishing great relationships and bonds with my athletes.  They give me a great sense of pride and accomplishment when I see them out on the practice field or during games.  I can’t really define the “worst part” of coaching.  The only thing I can think of is when my seniors graduate.  We all are like family and I miss them when they graduate.
