The American Cancer Society has raised more than $4 billion through Relay for Life events around the country since the first Relay in 1985.

According to the American Cancer Society website, the money raised in these events goes directly towards supporting research, education, awareness and patient support services.

This year's Relay for Life of Westminster has raised more than $140,000 so far and event chair Lisa Subock said that she expects to reach the goal of $185,000 by the end of August, when the 2011 Relay fundraising efforts officially end.

Relay For Life is an incredibly moving event - one that energizes the entire community to make a difference in the battle against cancer. It's hard to capture what "Relay" is all about but this video says it all. Thank you to the American Cancer Society and to all of the Relay For Life Teams for all you do! And thank you to Westminster.Patch.com for covering this event! Great job!

I am the Team Captain for Hart's Hope. The majority of the team members are cancer survivors. We meet each week to help each other and try to support those newly diagnosed. Our team walks for all those we have lost and honor those that continue to fight. I have been walking for 8 years and will continue to walk until there is no reason to walk. Thank you for covering this event.
