Cops, Kids Work Together at Annual 'Shop with a Cop' Event

Officers from the Westminster Police Department went shopping this weekend.

For eight years, Westminster policemen and women have spent a day each holiday season helping local families do their Christmas shopping as part of the national "Shop with a Cop" event.

According to a news release, the “Shop With A Cop” program originated in 1978 as a way to give deserving children an opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts for their family members.  The program also gives children the opportunity to meet and spend time with police officers in a positive and non-confrontational environment.

This year, 23 officers, as well as civilians and kids helped 20 kids and 7 families shop for gifts for their families.

More than 90 local businesses made a donation to support the “Shop With A Cop” program and approximately 275 “Angels” were purchased off the angel tree at WalMart by the citizens of Carroll County. These gifts were distributed to the children and their families.

After the shopping was done, participants enjoyed a party that included gift wrapping, food and entertainment.
