Twenty-three pieces of land, 13 in Westminster and seven in Eldersburg, will be put up for sale in the coming months.
The Board of County Commissioners voted two to one to dispose of 23 surplus properties in the coming months as recommended by county staff.
The Commissioners had previously directed the Director of Public Works, Thomas Rio, to determine whether the county has surplus property and, if so, make a recommendation as to the proper disposition of such properties, according to a county government news release.
At a recent public meeting of the commissioners, Rio recommended that the Board dispose of 23 parcels of land which are currently owned by the county but have no foreseeable future use by the county. Most of the parcels included in this recommendation are less than one acre in size with the largest being approximately 35 acres, according to a news release.
The property will be sold through an advertised, public sale in the coming months.
Commissioner Doug Howard made the motion to sell the properties as recommended and use the proceeds of the sale to fund future road construction projects, according to the news release. He further moved that 60 percent of the proceeds from any properties sold by the Carroll County Industrial Development Authority would also be used to fund future road construction projects.
Commissioners Haven Shoemaker and Howard supported the motion as proposed, while Commissioner Robin Frazier supported disposing of the property, but opposed the proposal to use the sale proceeds to fund future road projects.
Commissioners Shoemaker and Howard voted in favor of the motion and Commissioner Frazier voted in opposition. Commissioners Richard Rothschild and David Roush were not present.
