Denny's Restaurant Hosts Autism Awareness Night (Corrected)

Autism Awareness Night will take place at Denny's, 400 Englar Rd., on July 27 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Pathfinders for Autism and Denny’s restaurants for have teamed up for Autism Awareness Night, a night of dining out for individuals with autism and their families.

Denny's will provide special accommodations including reduced background music, a quiet area in case of need and staff trained in autism sensitivity, according to a news release.  Ten percent of all proceeds will benefit Pathfinders for Autism, an organization that was created by parents of children with autism, including Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer B.J. Surhoff and his wife Polly.

“Pathfinders for Autism is extremely grateful to partner with Denny’s restaurants in hosting Autism Awareness Nights," said B.J. Surhoff, President of Pathfinders for Autism in the news release. “Denny’s support will benefit our current programs for families and individuals with autism, all of which we provide free of charge.  These evenings of dining out will be a special treat for many families, while creating awareness for autism among everyone who visits the restaurants on these nights. ”

Autism affects 1 in 110 children in the U.S. today. In Maryland, more than 8,827 children in public schools are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and there are thousands more adults in the state in need of services and support.
