Rally at UMBC Supports DREAM Act Legislation

The Dream Act, which provides in-state tuition rates for undocumented immigrants, will go to referendum in November.

Karina is a "Dreamer." She says she's not the only one.

The 22-year-old illegal immigrant and Montgomery College student spoke Wednesday at a news conference at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County to kick off Educating Maryland Kids, an effort to pass the Maryland DREAM Act.

"My mother has always told me that education is the path to my success and I very much believe that," said the woman who was only identified by her first name.

Do you support the DREAM Act? Tell us in comments.

Karina, who plans on graduating next year with dual associate degrees in general studies and mental health, called for support for a bill that would grant in-state tuition rates to students like herself who are in this country illegally or are considered undocumented immigrants.

The law that would grant that opportunity will go before the voters in November after narrowly passing the General Assembly in 2011. Opponents collected nearly 109,000 signatures of registered Maryland voters, nearly twice the required number, to force the issue to the ballot.

Educating Maryland Kids, a coalition of groups including the Catholic church and other faith-based, education, civil rights, and labor unions, kicked off its efforts to educate voters and uphold the recently passed tuition bill.

"The Catholic church supports the DREAM Act because we believe that every person, regardless of their legal status is a child of God," said Bishop Denis Madden, Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. "As a church and as a community, we flourish when we strive to provide the opportunity for every person to reach their full potential and to develop the unique God-given gifts that they have been given.

"We are convinced that when Marylanders know the facts about the DREAM Act, that they will happily embrace the chance to do the right thing for our young people," Madden said.

Carroll Community College Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Dr. James Ball said it's important to get voter feedback on the Dream Act but he did not take a stance as for or against the legislation.

“The referendum in November will allow voters to have a voice. It is important to include voter opinion about the Dream Act. Carroll Community College stands ready to serve, whatever the outcome,” Ball said.

Del. Pat McDonough, a Middle River Republican and a leading opponent of the law, said the coordinated effort to support the law is not a surprise. He said opponents will not be able to match the money he expects groups like Educating Maryland Kids to spend before the election.

"We don't have O'Malley money, and we don't have SEIU union money, and we don't have any angels saying, 'Here's some money, go out and tell the truth.'" McDonough said. "What we have are people across the state who believe this is wrong."

McDonough plans to hold his own news conference Thursday in Middle River—an unofficial kick-off to defeat the measure, he said.

The Republican delegate Tuesday criticized Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, for attending and speaking at the event.

"He's a public official and his salary is paid for by the taxpayers of Maryland," McDonough said. "What right does he have to advocate for breaking the law?"

The University System of Maryland has twice voted to support the law.

Hrabowski said the event, even though it was held at his university, was not a university-sponsored event—though he said he personally supports the effort.

"As an american educator, I have a special believe that the more we can do to educate the children in this country, the better off our country will be," Hrabowski said. "In fact, I would argue that it is our way as Americans, to believe in our children.

"Children need to know that adults believe in them and that they appreciate the power of of education to transform lives. Where would we be without an education?"

Tired of Doing Without

Although I agree with Mr. Hrabowski that educating our children is imperative to our future, I dont agree that taxpayers should foot the bill to educate illegal immigrants. It is not my responsibility. My daughters worked hard in school, earning honors and placement to prestigious academic institutions. I paid for my daughters education. Maryland did not assit me (a single mother) with educating my daughters. I scrimped and saved and did without to ensure my daughters had opportunities I did not. The taxpayers of Maryland will take a stand in November against the "Dream Act" and send Gov. O'Malley.

I think you are missing the subject matter here. Maryland Dream Act students or their parents will pay as much as you did to educate your daughters. It's about in-state tuition for people who worked hard like you.

This issue goes so far beyond immigration, one would have to be living in a cave not to understand the impact this seditious act of government has on it's citizens....Don't fall for it....if one is illegally here, they cannot work PERIOD!!!! An employer is legally bound to keep records on the legal status of every employee...if an illegal is working here, they are being paid under the table, contributing NOTHING in tax revenue to the treasuries....many of them collect welfare as well....don't believe me???? Check out the latest Census findings....and the best part are the third world diseases they are bringing into our country because of no health screenings....so, the next time you take your family out for a nice meal, better look in the kitchen to see who's cooking the food....http://www.usillegalaliens.com/impacts_of_illegal_immigration_diseases.html

If she is smart enough to get an Associates degree then she should be smart enough to get a Green Card. What good will a degree do if she can't get a job?

JoAnn is absolutely right! It's all about increasing the democratic voting base by pandering to the latinos. The democrats already have the black community in their back pocket, now it's time to go after another minority.

Yada, yada, da, JoAnn. How come you don't pick on Warren Buffet's buddies who are always holding out their hands, looking for big corporate welfare? Picking on children who had no choice but to be living and building a life here is not only bullying.
It's counter productive to adding to America's talent pool

My name is Erick Lastarria, a member of UMCP's Class of 2006. I've been paying taxes since 2006 even though I was undocumented. I said I was because I filed for permanent residency on February 29, 2012. Navigating through our immigration laws is extremely difficult. Many people are barred from adjusting their statuses because of the current state of affairs of our immigration laws. Many of these kids, who came to the USA with their parents at early age, can't simply apply for a green card. Therefore, they pushed for a law called the federal DREAM Act to be allowed to adjust their status after complying with several requirements.

We need the DREAM act passed by congress so these students can keep on dreaming.

Believe me, I understand the immigration process. I am watching a young man I know go through it right now...He is doing it legally and was never offered any preferential treatment for work or a work permit as you suggest was done for you.....maybe he comes from the wrong country....

I have an ITIN #. USCIS has already taken almost five months to review my case. Waiting more than 14 years to file for permanent residency and suffering the consequences of being undocumented does not seem to me like being from the right country. I come from a poor family composed by legal and out-of-legal status immigranta that aspires to become middle class. My mother will become a US citizen next year. Then, my case will be processed at a faster pace.

Good luck to you, Erick. My great-great grandparents came from Ireland via Canada, and I doubt there were Green Cards involved. The Dream Act can only help to make our country stronger.

it has taken almost three years for my friend to be able to gain employment legally. immigrants who come here legally, as you are depicting aboutnyourself, are not the problem....the ones in the video clip of this mover, They Come To America are the problem....Dennis Lynch spent much time traveling throughout the US to acquire the truth about illegal immigration and the negative impact it has on the taxpaying citizens of this country, not to mention the third world diseases that are springing up....you seem to be like my friend Erick, someone wishingnto make the US his home to seek a bettr life....but it MUST be done lawfully...if the laws are ridiculously difficult, they could be altered but NO FREE TAXPAYER FUNDED PERKS for anyone not here legally NO WAY!!!!!http://www.theycometoamerica.com/

ICE isn't looking to deport Dream Act elegible young men and women. USCIS will start reviewing the cases of potential Dream Act beneficiares starting August 15, 2012. What's the excuse now? If we don't take advantage of this new administrative directive, other states will do it. If we are pursuing academic excellence, we need to vote green on the Maryland Dream Act. It's the right thing to do for our "fellow tax payers."

The way you use the word illegal is unacceptable. These kids did not break the law. When you get a dwi or a shoplift charge, does your child face your charges? It's time you get real. Coming into the country without being inspected is a civil violation.

Most of who I am was taught to me by the actions, behavior and hard work of my parents. Environment is the mold in creating a human being. Granted there are other factors but environment is one of the most vital....If it is unacceptable to say the children are illegally here, then just HOW did they get here Erick Lastarria???? Did some stork from Mexico drop them here??? We not only have an issue with an undocumented, illegal child but we have the parents who brought them here...So in Erick Lastarria's world, American taxpayers MUST pay for Mom, Dad and all that comes aftr to have the DREAM of an American life....Sorry, I don't think it's going to work....not with the people who foot the bill....maybe the drones who seek the power, but not the folks who foot the bill.....

Let's not spin what the point made is....taxpayers are paying for far more than a state based tuition, not to mention the health risk that legal citizens, particularly our children, by being exposed to people who've had none of the health screening that a legal immigrant goes through..

FYI, your health is check before you can enroll at a public school. If I pay the same amount in taxes as my neighbor, how does that disqualifies my son from getting in-state tuition?

But you sir are not a legal citizen, therefore you have not been screened for communicable disease as your legal immigrants have been...when you become a legal citizen of this country according to our laws, you are welcomed to your in-state tuition...Until then, this is a violation of immigration law and our Constitution...and just because there's some lawless politician willing to prostitute themselves for a vote, doesn't change what is legal vs illegal....http://www.topix.com/forum/news/immigration/TOHF18ECA5AT2BQH1 THIS is what every American is exposed to when our politicians turn their heads to illegals working in this country...it is beyond disgusting!!!
