UPDATE (8:55 p.m. Saturday)—Maryland State Police said a 61-year-old man died after he was assaulted and stabbed at his home around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

According to a police press release, Edward C. Zepp of the 100 block of West Main Street in Westminster was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police charged David M. Montgomery, 28, of no fixed address, with first- and second-degree murder. Montgomery was reportedly found in the 4000 block of Ritchie Highway in Anne Arundel County around noon on Saturday.

Investigators discovered that Montgomery and Zepp knew each other, but the motive for the assault is unclear at this time. According to the release, Montgomery was Zepp's roommate for about a year from 2011 to 2012. Preliminary information indicates Montgomery moved out of Zepp’s apartment this past summer. Montgomery had lived at various locations since then.

Anne Arundel County police received calls reporting a van being operated erratically, according to police. When police responded to the area, they found the suspect in the store parking lot with the van that belonged to Zepp.

Police responded to a report of assault at 4 a.m. on Saturday in Westminster and found Zepp lying on the back porch of his home with trauma to his neck.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Zepp lived alone in the downstairs apartment of a two-story home that was divided into two apartments.

Police said that noises suggesting a struggle were heard from the home just after 4 a.m. Residents in the area found Zepp on the back porch.

The back door of the apartment appeared to have been damaged, according to the press release. State Police homicide investigators obtained a search warrant for the home and will continue to investigate.

Zepp’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine a cause and manner of death.
