MD Dems Host Twitter Town Hall on Sequestration

Mandated federal budget cuts, if not averted, could impact the large federal presence in Maryland.

Maryland's congressional Democrats are taking to Twitter Thursday afternoon to talk about the coming sequestration cuts to federal budgets.

The cuts, equally split between defense and non-defense spending, could have a large impact on Maryland if not averted. Civil employees could be furloughed a day per pay period, and the cuts would also impact work at military bases in Maryland, including at Fort Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground.

In Elkridge on Wednesday, Gov. Martin O'Malley said sequestration could cost 12,000 jobs in Maryland.

The town hall from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday will be held on the hashtag #AskMDDems and questions and answers will be posted on the delegation's own Twitter feed.

We will be following the responses and updating this feed as the town hall continues.

What garbage. Dutch is so used to lying that it has become a part of him. The sequestration is a cut in the projected increase in spending not a cut from their current budgets. This panic talk is just that. Cut from the programs the federal government funds that is not part of their Constitutional requirements. The federal government is REQUIRED to maintain the military. They are NOT required to fund school breakfast & lunch programs or welfare programs. Ho do what you do best Dutch which is absolutely nothing.

You are clearly totally mis-informed. This is a cut across the board for all Federal agencies and will have far ranging impacts to everyone, particularly in a state such as Maryland which has a higher than average number of Federal workers. It WILL impact you.

Let it impact Americans. Government is to damn big. To many agencies that continue to do the same job anyway.

"What, Sir, is the use of a militia?
It is to prevent the establishment
of a standing army, the bane of liberty. ...
Whenever Governments mean to invade
the rights and liberties of the people,
they always attempt to destroy the militia,
in order to raise an army upon their ruins." Elbridge Gerry (No the Army is a huge reason we are in this mess and not required by government but by the military industrial complex, the great theieves of our teasury and liberty)

Scare tactics abound. It is awful we have to be treated like little children. We should not notice any changes in anything from this 'crisis'. The amount cut is only equal to one month of Fed spending at the most....We will survive for sure. The Congress should really DO some work for a change, the POTUS doesn't do much of anything to cut our spending except spend more than we have.It is time to stop!!!!!!!!!!

Coming from the people who dont mind propping up big oil and banks. For your info johnny this pres has brought down spending so check your facts. We need to create jobs and why not spend more when the interest rates are so low. Lets cut off the the off shorers and give breaks to people who create jobs here! You create jobs and people spend more and kick start the economy. You cant cut your way back. If you own a business you dont stop buying product to sell cause thats a sure way to go out of business. If the private guys wont create jobs then the fed has to! After WW2 the fed went on a massive infrastructure building boom and we had one of our best times ever! Bold ideas, not sticking your head in the sand! Reagan borrowed massive amounts of money for a stimulus(yes STIMULUS) and within 20 years Clinton was running a surplus(yes SURPLUS). Or we can be Japan and poke along for 30 years barely keeping our heads above water and unemployment at 10% trying to cut our way out of a bad situation . And yes lets get rid of everybody in DC,I mean everybody and send a message to "Do Your Job"!

I commend to you the Congressional Budget Office reports at CBO.gov. There you will read that "this president" in fact hasn't reduced spending. He has, however, increased the debt. Sequester is a 2.5% or less reduction in the projected growth of federal spending -- it's not anything else.

What a joke - a few months ago OMalley was running his mouth about how strong the economy was in MD. Anyone with a grain of sense understood that MD survived because of its reliance on the federal teat. Instead of propping up the private sector, OMalley drove out small businesses. So now he should be answering for the lost jobs. As for cuts - lets start with the golf courses at PAX, APG and Ft Meade. Do we really need bases throughout all of Europe? We could probably cut half the jobs at SSA with no effect. And yes - Arne Duncan and the Dept of Ed can go as well.

Joe you cannot just wave a magic "give 'em breaks" wand to make businesses create more jobs here in the US. You need to create a business friendly environment not pile on more and more taxes and regulations for businesses, especially for manufacturing jobs. Passing "Right To Work" legislation is also a must to bring back more businesses and before you or anyone else starts whining about how unions are still needed to "regulate" how businesses treat their employees, check the many lists of the top 100 companies to work for and you will see that less than 5% of them are union. Plus, "Right To Work" does not equal anti union it just means a person cannot be forced to join a union or pay union dues if they do not join. Maryland is not a Right To Work state and it is listed in the bottom third consistently for being business friendly. This is not the same economic environment as it was in the post WW2 era and we already tried to "stimulate" the economy to with nearly a Trillion dollars worth of so called shovel ready jobs that proved to be a complete failure. More government jobs is certainly not the answer in a time when our government needs to reduce spending not increase it.

If you are still a Republican in 2013 you really need to seriously look at your life and the choices you have made that have gotten you to be so ignorant, bitter, and pathetic in life that you would still support the party of the "stupid" who's only goal is to destroy this country
..Basically, you are a DISGRACE to America!

We know we know you are superior over all others. You are a Supremacist in your own mind. You are the definition of BIGOT :a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance.

Be careful Matthew, you may get a job from one of those you just described. Will you accept their money? If you need an ambulance, will you accept life saving help if the EMT is a DISGRACE to America?
If one of those "ignorant, bitter, and pathetic" people NEEDS help and you are there will you help them? I am disappointed that people like you hold such hate in your heart towards those you do not even know. Talk of "ignorant, bitter, and pathetic"?
