NWS: Storms and More On the Way

The approaching weather looks hazardous, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong showers and thunderstorms are on the way, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), and they may bring with them additional severe weather.

In its hazardous weather statement, NWS warns that the approaching storms may cause localized flash flooding, damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes.

The worst of the storms is expected Tuesday afternoon – sometime between noon and 6 p.m., according to NWS.

In a statement issued Tuesday morning, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) wrote that wind gusts could damage overhead and underground equipment, causing power outages.

"As BGE and our field crews prepare to respond to weather-related outages as safely and as quickly as possible, should they occur, customers are also urged to take time now to prepare before the forecasted storm enters our service area," Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Jeannette M. Mills wrote in the statement.

BGE does not do certain types of repairs if winds are gusting faster than 25 mph so, Mills wrote, "BGE will begin restoring service as soon as it is safe to do so. The safety of our employees, contractors and customers is our first priority at BGE."

The statement reminds customers who use generators to follow the instructions and use them in well-ventilated areas. After the June derecho storm, Howard County officials found several instances of homes with dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide due to improper generator use.

BGE also suggests having the following on hand in case of a power outage:

  • Batteries
  • Flashlights (not candles)
  • Battery-operated clock radio
  • Corded phone and/or fully charged cell phone
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Blankets

Report downed power lines by calling 800-658-0123. Report outages using the BGE automated system at 877-778-2222. Keep track of outages and restoration progress on BGE’s website; following BGE on Twitter (@mybge); or liking BGE on Facebook.
