Police: 6-Year-Old Dead in Single Vehicle Car Accident

A Jeep lost control and hit a utility pole police said.

A 6-year-old girl died in a single vehicle crash on New Windsor Road (Rt. 31) in Westminster Monday night, according to Maryland State Police.

Police said they were called to the scene where a Jeep had hit a utility pole, at New Windsor Road and Wakefield Road, around 11 p.m. Monday night.

Rise Berger, 39, of Union Bridge, was heading east on New Windsor Road when her Jeep slid out of control on the wet roadway and hit a utility pole, according to police reports.

Berger's daughter, Marissa Carter, 6, who was in a child safety seat in the rear passenger seat, died from severe head trauma, police said. Investigators said the child safety seat wasn't installed properly.

Berger was taken to Carroll Hospital Center. Police said neither alcohol nor speed were considered to be factors in the accident.
