Police: Suicidal Motorist from Westminster Kills Reisterstown Woman, Hospitalizes Self in Crash

A 20-year-old Westminster man was hospitalized a crash in Reisterstown Tuesday night that killed a 74-year-old woman.

A Reisterstown woman was killed Tuesday night after a motorist threatening to kill himself crashed into her car on Reisterstown Road in front of Franklin High School.

Martha Tabares, 74, of the 900 block of Shirley Manor Road in Reisterstown, was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorist threatening suicide, 20-year-old Nicholas Frederick Mottley, of the 600 block of Wilmont Road in Westminster, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition was unknown Wednesday morning, according to a police press release.

At 8:13 p.m. Tuesday, Baltimore County Police responded to I-795 southbound between Owings Mills Boulevard and I-695. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office warned police that a man driving a maroon Chevrolet Traverse who was threatening “suicide by cop” was headed to Baltimore County, the release said.

Police found the vehicle in the Walmart parking lot, at 9750 Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills. The motorist hit a police vehicle and drove westbound on Reisterstown Road. Police briefly pursued the Traverse until the chase called off by the precinct shift commander the release said.

“It was too fast,” said police spokeswoman Elise Armacost.

There are risks to officers and other motorists in chases, Armacost said. Police never lost track of Mottley, she said.

Minutes after the pursuit was called off, the Traverse crossed the center line on Reisterstown Road in front of Franklin High School, striking an eastbound Toyota Corolla driven by Tabares, the release said.

The Traverse kept moving, hitting a Chrysler Town & Country van and a utility pole, finally coming to rest about 40 feet from the pole, the release said.

The van received minor damage and its driver was not injured, the release said.

The Baltimore County Police’s crash team is investigating the collision involving the three vehicles, and the Franklin Precinct is conducting the investigation involving the Traverse hitting the police vehicle in the Walmart parking lot. Charges against Mottley are pending those investigations, police said.

Can't believe he selfishly took someones innocent life away from a 74 year old woman how ironic he threatens suicide and lives.Let's all guess how this turns out,he will probably get probation before judgement and gets to live a full healthy life of commiting more crimes at the taxpayers expense.good thing md is against the death penalty maybe we should outlaw chevy traverses then it would"ve never happened.(sarcasm)

At least his murder by Chevy only killed one person. Imagine if this nut had an assault weapon with the 100+ ammo.

For a lawyer, that is a pretty uninformed thing to say. Maybe it should read, "at least he didn't use his assault vehicle to murder dozens by driving into a crowded shopping center or metro station."
And what is "the 100+ ammo"? Do you mean a magazine that holds 100 rounds?

Do you mean that only statements that fit in with your world views are "informed?" I read the paper all the time, and don't recall hearing about a lot of incidents where a suicidal/homicidal person drove into dozens in a crowded shopping center. ( I think I remember one about 20 years ago in NY--and most people were able to dodge the car and finally a group overpowered him and pulled him out.) He could also have hijacked a plane and flew it into a building a killed thousands, he could have poisoned the water of a major city, he could have loaded his car with explosives and drove it into a crowd, or yes, could have tried to run down dozens by driving into a crowded shopping center parking lot (getting into the mall itself would be a trick)--luckily, all those actions are somewhat difficult to accomplish. Getting a gun that holds 100 rounds is pretty easy to do in most parts of this country.

Kathy,

If your going to makes comments on articles, please for the sake of the community at least have your comments be somewhat relevant to the article. Cars don't = assault rifle + 100 rounds.

Not to mention nowhere in the article did it state that the person was attempting to harm others. Only that someone was killed in a collision while a person was attempting to 'suicide by cop'.

You are a lawyer, details are your arsenal. You've shot yourself in the foot.

James, I agree that there is no evidence that this person deliberately killed another with his vehicle, but that does seem to be the assumption of people, and since that is what the discussion was about in general, I responded accordingly, if somewhat hastily. But you are right, cars do not = assault weapons, because there is a legitimate purpose for a car other than killing someone. And since I don't own a gun I can't shoot myself in the foot, although I could perhaps run over my foot with a car. :-)

By the way, I have no objections to people owning guns--as long as there are reasonable regulations in place to ensure that criminals and mentally ill persons cannot obtain them. And yes, that won't prevent all homicides, or even all crazies from getting guns, but it is at least a start. It is disingenuous to say "We can't stop all murders so we shouldn't have any restrictions on the right to own guns." We don't say "We can't stop all underage drinking, so let's do away with the age limit."

Nice straw man argument there, Kathy. Overruled!

Whenever I read these sorts of stories, I go to Maryland Judiciary Case Search to see the person's legal history, and I usually find that they've had multiple brushes with police from the time they came of age (which, of course, makes me wonder what their juvenile records look like). This one is no different.

Why can't suicidal people stop committing homicide first?

Last year over 3000 people committed suicide--and we don;t remember any of them. But we remember the names of the guys who shot dozens of people in Newtown, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Auora. These people want publicity and to be remembered, The more horrific the crime, the more their name gets plastered on the news.

I know, let's pass a law that prevents plastering the names of these killers all over the place... Oh, wait... the media wouldn't let that happen. Their right to a "free press" trumps everything else in, near, about, alongside, on the same planet at their right to freedom of the press.

Remember newsies: If they can destroy any one of the ten amendments to the Constitution formerly known as the Bill of Rights, they can destroy them all.

Hey Kathy I think I hear an ambulance siren. You should get on it. Why don't you keep your left scare tactics to yourself if you cannot comet intelligently on the facts at hand. Your lawyers are part of the problem just sucking the life out of our country for your own profit and gain. Get a real job.

Most of the mass shootings we hear about couldve easily been somewhat prevented if the media would stop publicizing each one with so many details. Of course people with mental issues & suicidal/homicidal tendencies are gonna continue to try to "1up" every other shooter & shoot more than the last. Blame the media also for continuing to publicize it. Most are loaners & want to be famous. God bless the the soul of the elderly lady. We should have exceptions in death penalty cases & fry him

Kathy you are a disgrace to everyone even lawyers and that says allot, you of all people should be able to understand any object in the world is not going to kill anyone until a idiot human gets a hold of it, does not matter how many rounds a clip can hold, you just have multiple clips, it takes almost a whole half a second to change clips and go from one 10 round mag to another, you think that half second is going to make a difference?/ Oh yea your liberal democrat who still thinks throwing money at anything is the answer.

Kathy, please tell competitive shooters and Olympic shooters they are guilty as charged because guns only are made for killing so they must be killers...they'll get a good laugh out of it. I would hope that as a lawyer you would understand that hyperbole is not a good legal argument.

Oh, and cops too. Next time you go in the courthouse, be sure to denounce the officers there as killers as they will be carrying guns. I mean, if you're gonna generalize...
