Suspect Charged in String of Robberies in Carroll, 3 Other Counties

A Laurel man was charged in a series of robberies after being tracked to a hotel in Odenton.

A man charged in the January robbery of a Taylorsville Bank has been arrested and also faces similar charges in connection with robberies in Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Prince George's counties, according to a press release from the Maryland State Police.

Troopers with the Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack and Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team, along with the Howard County Police Department, arrested Jeffrey Wayne Malcolm, 55, of Laurel after he was tracked to a hotel in Odenton.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 1:10 p.m., troopers from the Westminster Barrack responded to the PNC Bank located in the 1600 block of West Liberty Road, Sykesville, for a report of a robbery.

Troopers learned that a lone suspect entered the bank wearing a mask over his face and demanded money from a bank teller. The teller complied and gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect fled the store on foot and entered an older model green passenger vehicle and was observed heading east on Route 26. No weapon was displayed and no one was injured during the robbery.

On Feb. 4 at approximately 11 a.m., the SunTrust Bank in Monrovia in Frederick County had a similar robbery with the same vehicle description. In this case a witness noticed the suspect leave and saw him without his mask, according to a press release. The witness also got a tag number for the green passenger vehicle in which the the suspect fled.

Troopers said Malcolm was a suspect in the Monrovia and Taylorsville robberies.  Troopers also learned that Malcolm was a suspect in several other robberies in Howard and Prince George’s counties.

Malcolm is currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center on $250,000 bond while warrants from several jurisdictions, including Carroll, are being processed. Troopers also spent several hours executing search warrants on Malcolm’s hotel room and vehicle.

Joint investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Trooper First Class Corey Green of the Maryland State Police at 410-386-3000.
