Taco Bell Drive-Through Topic of Committee Meeting

Members of the Westminster Planning and Zoning Commission worked with Taco Bell officials on traffic mitigation for the eatery's future drive-through window.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission is considering a request from Taco Bell, which is planning to tear down and rebuild its restaurant at 625 Baltimore Blvd. A drive-through window is planned.

Demolition on the restaurant is set to start in September.

“The site of the drive-through is controversial because of the traffic flow there,” Mellissa Hynes, the city’s comprehensive planner, said before a commission meeting last week.

According to Hynes, changes to the original plan that city staff and  planning commission members worked out with Taco Bell include an “emergency exit” in the drive-through line so customers could  “dip-out.”

Hynes said staff also requested a stop bar and stop sign for people leaving the drive-through so that they can stop to see if people are coming off Rte. 140 into the shopping center.

“We were concerned about the parking lot becoming congested, so we asked for a crosswalk to an overflow parking lot along with crosswalk signage,” Hynes stated in an e-mail.

As part of the re-worked plans, there will be stop-bars and signage to direct people to different routes when leaving the shopping center or when going to another side of Taco Bell.

“The Planning Commission recognized that residents wanted a drive-through and did their best to work with Taco Bell to make it work in the safest way possible,” Hynes stated.
