- Local every day in
The weather Monday was befitting a morning after a Ravens loss to the Redskins.
But for some Baltimore football fans, it was a beautiful day, as the oft-blamed Cam Cameron was relieved of his duties as the Ravens' offensive coordinator. Quarterbacks coach and former Colts head coach Jim Caldwell will take over play-calling duties.
Cameron was the lightning rod for a Ravens fan base expectant of improvement on the offensive side of the ball, where the franchise invested high draft picks and significant contracts to improve a decade-long weakness.
Cameron was fired a day after the Ravens fumbled away a late lead to the Redskins, who walked off with an overtime field goal. It was the Ravens' second straight loss—and a 4th-and-29 conversion in San Diego away from a third straight defeat.
What are your thoughts now, after the Ravens let Cameron go?
Will the change in leadership be the cure-all? Is someone else to blame? Where do the Ravens go from here?
TELL US: What are your feelings after the Ravens fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron Monday morning? Leave a comment and join in the conversation with Patch readers from around the Baltimore metro area.

Now that Cam is gone, who is going to show Joe Flacco the proper technique to use when taking a knee with the score tied, time on the clock, a timeout left and one of the best place kickers in the game?

They should fire Flacco, he is a second/third tier QB, without the mental agility to carry a NFL offense he can only QB on a team with an excellent injhurt-free defense that covers his total incompetence

Having watched Flacco his whole NFL career, your comment is nonsense. Flacco's a good QB, and we've seen what he can do when desperation forced Cameron to adjust. The Ravens have won 9 games this year without an "injury-free defense," so your opinion is based on an error.

It's about time! Hopefully Jim Caldwell will use a more balanced attack utilizing Ray Rice and the running backs who have proven themselves time and again. They were doing a great job in the first half yesteday then Cam decided to shut them down and throw the ball and the game away. I hate to see a late season shake up,but it may be the only way they can make it through the playoffs.

Cameron kept running the ball in the second half against the Redskins. The problem wasn't the number of passes the Ravens ran, but the type. Haslett had adjusted his defense to blitz, Cameron didn't adjust to account for the blitz. We've seen that from him for more than four years.

Amen!! The play calling has been absurd this year, not that Flacco's performance has been much better. Add those two to an offensive line that lets people crush Flacco causing his fumbles and you've got serious problems. Did I mention that the pass defense sucks as does the tackling in general? Much as I love the Ravens, they are team with major fundamental flaws in both directions. I predict the Bronco's will crush them and they may lose to the Giants and even the Bengals. Super Bowl? Not for a long time.

This is a really strange development. I'd be angry if I were a Ravens fan. The timing is poor, and Caldwell as OC isn't going to make Flacco any better. This would've been a better call in the offseason, you know?
Rice ran for 120 yards and the team had an additional 50 or so on top of that yesterday.
Firing Cameron now just strikes me as irrational, like King Harbaugh is manufcturing fall guys ahead of time.
For a franchise like the Ravens which generally does their business 'the right way' this is an odd detour.

You're likely right, but usually Bisciotti stays out of personnel. Either way I don't believe this helps them currently.
Next season? Absolutely.
This is just the type of move you make when you are 4 and 9, not 9 and 4.

It's strange for sure.
But on the other hand, do you think they would have had a better chance in the next several games (and possibly playoffs) sticking with Cam still as OC or with Caldwell as OC? The personnel is there but the play calling has been baffling at times and Cam never made any adjustments resulting in the Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde we've seen of this offense.

Corduroy: Again, this is just a somewhat outsider's opinion, but yes, I think they were better off keeping Cameron and jettison him at season end if that's the desire.
Fun fact: Caldwell hasn't called offensive plays since....2000. In college - Wake forest, I think.

I've had the pleasure to listen and watch Raven's games since I moved here several years ago. But I still bleed Orange and Blue (Broncos).
Typically when something like this happens, it's out of frustration. Good or bad, it'll be interesting to see. There were reports that Harbs told Cam to go for it at the end of the half and instead Cam told them to kneel and let time expire.
If Norv Turner is fired at the end of this season (I hope not for the sake of my Broncos ;) ), he would make a great OC for the Ravens.

You guys are - on some level - lucky the record's 9 and 4. Try not to kill your DC too much.
See how well you'd do without your best cover corner, best run stopping LB, Ngata nursing a bum knee, and oh yeah Suggs your best LB period missing the game as well.
The Ravens this season injury wise remind me of the Giants last season. Secondary was absolutely wrecked. Any time they were in the dime, it was some bum off the street playing 6th DB. Antrel Rolle, starting free safety, ended up being our nickel back instead. In fact, he's basically doing that NOW - again, injuries, injuries, injuries.
If the Ravens are going anywhere in the playoffs, it's going to be on the backs of Rice and Flacco.

If I owned the team and they had just blown the (2nd) chance at clinching the division, home feild advantage, and the championship. Someones head would roll..
No one wants to spill the beans on Hardbough but altimatly he is the Head coach!
I hope it was his call on Camron and not Biscotti I would have more respect for him to make change. We can talk injuries all you want on both sides of the ball but every team at this point is dealing with Injuries, JMO

Should have happened at the end of last year. Harbaugh realizes that he can no longer protect Cameron without putting his self at risk. Too bad we had to wait until the season is nearly over.

The new OC can't do anything about the dumb turnovers, penalties, soft defense, and 64 yard punt returns. The Ravens have scored enough points to win the games they lost even with the lackluster offense and mistakes.
The defense is going to get pounded by Denver next week and there's nothing that Caldwell will be able to do about it. The only thing saving the defensive coordinator is that he will be given some slack because of all the injuries. That prevent defense they played in the 4th quarter when RGIII was obviously hobbled and hurt was idiotic. One or two all out blitzes would have ended the game.

They need to fire Flacco, he is only good enough to be what he was drafted for, a backup, he doesn't have the mental agility to run an NFL offense without an excellant injury-free defense his incompetance is glaring.

I agree with his firing, but what I'd really like to see is Flacco benched! Or any of the players who really screw up on the field. But Flacco looks disinterested in being on the field or for that matter at the stadium. He looks like he needs about 5-6 Five Hour Energy drinks. If a player can't make the throw or a receiver can't catch the ball then sit them on the bench! Give somebody else a chance. It' s not the coach's fault, it the players who can't perform.

Who's better than Flacco right now? Who's been to the playoffs 4 years in a row and made it to the AFC championship game. Oh yeah, he also made the throws to win those games but our receivers couldn't catch the ball. I wouldn't call Flacco elite but I would put him in the top10 in the league right now. O line is weak and we are missing 6 of our 11 starters on def.

It comes down to quarterback play. 4 top quarterbacks with teams in contention:
It will ultimately come down to: AFC BRADY VS. MANNING
NFC ROGERS VS. MANNING
These are the big boys. They make average coaches look great, average players look great. They arrived with their teams by pure luck, except for Peyton - Elway was willing to sign a possibly injured Peyton for the chance to win a Super Bowl. He knows the value of a top QB.
They are the best of the best.
Then you have the second tier, Ben, Brees, RGIII (he is coming up quick) and Luck. Not as good as the Big 4 - but sure can win a championship with these folks.
Flacco is in that third tier. Schaub, Flacco, Ryan, Cutler, Romo and maybe 5 or 6 others. Can look good, but can look like scrubs also. Schaub looks like a big time scrub tonight. Not sure you can win a championship with this tier. Does anyone believe Schaub even at home can beat Brady and Manning in a playoff game. I will put my money on Brady or Manning all day.
Problem is - let Flacco leave, and we could be in trouble unless we get lucky and a top young QB falls into our lap.
Coaching can only do so much. As Charles Barkley said, "It is more about Freds and Joes and not X's and O's."

Jury is still out on the young 'uns. Similarly, until a quarterback is cut loose with the responsibility of managing the game and making the split second decisions based on experience and hunches, you can't really make the final decision on their worthiness or lack thereof. After that, they all undergo the test of time.
By the way, if RG,III keeps running around like he did Sunday, you can scratch him off your short list.
Tim
9:39 am on Tuesday, December 11, 2012
As much as it pains me to say this (as a Giants fan) RGIII is the real deal. Now, I don't expect him to run like this every year, but reality is he's twice the passer Vick was in Vick's own athletic prime.
Shanny has that ol' zone blocking scheme working for the Redskins again. They are going to be a pain in the ass for the next few seasons, much like the rest of the NFC East.
Luck is already showing late game moxy, it's just crazy how prepared/good these QBs are these days. you can lump Newton in there from last season as well. Not as good as the others, but pro ready? Absolutely.

I don't think Joe will be back next year. I think another team will offer him more money. He's a proven winner. We should have been in two Superbowls had it not been for our receivers dropping passes. The Ravens offensive line has sucked big time for the past two years and defense is becoming worn down. I don't think Drue Breeze or Erin Rodgers would have done much better with our offensive line and the receivers we have. I'm thinking if the Ravens will ever return to a top five defensive team, it's going to take 3-5 years. The offensive line is going to take at least 3 more years to rebuild also. Can you blame Joe for leaving with our Offensive line and Defense in such disarray? When he's gone, all the Flacco haters will be crying when Joe wins his first Superbowl in another uniform!

Marshall - I couldn't agree with you more. Flacco has what it takes and the team has some potential great receivers. I think a few other players would need to go before Flacco. Flacco became only the fourth QB to bring his team to 3 (count them) playoffs in a row. What more do you people want?

I realize that the offense does need work, but wasn't it the defense that allowed a back-up quarterback to come in, cold off the bench, and score on them?

That is the point. A guy walks in drives them and runs in the two like a hot knife thru butter. Was Cam the one who dropped the ball, misses the catches fails to convert, runs the wrong route. How does Cam make the defense tackle and not get injuried ?

Maybe Harbaugh became too close to his players.
Maybe Flacco doesn't inspire the team. Rarely see him on the sideline with anyone. He seems to sulk by himself. It's contagious as a supposed Leader of the team.
Wish I had the answers, I'd apply for the coaches job.
The players seem to be playing hard, but the combination of mistakes and losing is contageous to the teams ability to come together.
They do have the talent on the field, they just need to get it in their individual heads.

The offense will do a little better in the no-huddle, but the Ravens' real problem lies with the defense. Baltimore needs the offense to stay on the field longer in order to keep its clueless defense on the sideline. Oh, and Mr. Rice, no more bicep poses, please; it makes you look like a self-absorbed moron. The NFL started going downhill a long time ago.
Chuck Burton

Cameron's play calling had mostly become predictable by other teams. Example: Ravens have ball at or inside their own twenty - he almost always called two running plays and a pass. And if Flacco is really any good he should be free to analyse a defense and change the play when he chooses to. There needs to be trust between the coordinator and the quarterback. As the formerly famed Ravens defense succumbs to injury and age, the offense needs to step up and score more.
