WATCH: Filmmaker Engages Protesters in Illegal Immigration Discussion

A film screening at Carroll Community College had people talking about illegal immigration this week.

 

DREAM Act advocates protested a screening of the film They Come to America, hosted by a local offshoot of the tea party, at Carroll Community College Tuesday evening.

We the People of Carroll County hosted filmmaker Dennis M. Lynch, who is on a 50-city tour to promote his film , which according to Lynch's website "focuses on the human and financial costs of illegal immigration."

A handful of protesters attended the film screening and then joined fellow protesters outside the Scott Center.

We the People Chairperson Michelle Jefferson said that the issue at hand is the fact that people are breaking the law when they are here illegally and should not receive special consideration, including college tuition rates.

"We didn't cause this problem, but we're paying for it in higher taxes, in services that are being drained and jobs that are being lost," Jefferson said. "It isn't fair."

Andrew Castro is a member of the ANSWER Coalition, an organization that supports the Maryland DREAM Act. The DREAM Act allows high-performing, undocumented immigrant students to attend college locally while paying in-state tuition rates.

"We believe that the film is intended to spread misinformation about immigrants coming to the United States," Castro said. "We feel it’s spreading a lot of racist lies and distorting the truth of immigrants who come to this country. We’re here to challenge that."

Well, lets see, first off, these Illegals there didnt even stay for the film which shows both sides of the issue which ANSWER who are proponents of US Troops being killed, themselves didnt stay. They did not want to see or hear the facts. They are the racists and xenophobes and Director Dennis Michael Lynch even took on 2 Illegal Immigrants, one of which he had at his house with him, building an outdoor unit and got their side of the story, I guess the Racist group Casa De Maryland, MD Dreamers and ANSWER should have stayed for the whole thing and gotten the facts, instead, they went out to everyones car, violating Campus Laws by placing mis-information literature on everyones car. Shame on them, they are the racist and they are here illegally, which was described in the MOVIE as breaking the law.

What a load, CASTRO! That's all you got? I was at the Carroll County show your dream babies stayed for FIVE minutes and then walked out in a hissy because they didn't like the truth being shown. I wish they had publicized that this movie was going to be shown. I would like to see the entire thing (instead of just a YouTube Trailer). From the advertising clips that I saw, it seems like most of it took place on the Mexico-US border and dealt primarily with South American/Mexican immigration, in particular those individuals involved in the drug trade. Did anyone here actually see the movie? Does anyone know if there are plans for another showing?

Kathy- I think you are in luck! I am the one who intiially contacted Dennis Lynch when I heard him interviewed. I KNEW he had to come to sanctuary state of Maryland. Both of the shows were very successful. Over 300 people at the CC showing and over 100 at the Rockville showing (seating held about 100 and people had to be turned away) We are HOPING that we can get Dennis Lynch to come back to Maryland after the GOP convention (where his movie is going to be shown) You can also get a CD of the film. However, it is great to actually meet Dennis and hear him speak. He will take questions from the audience. Last I heard there were other groups in MD that wanted him to come back and were interested in showing the film. I saw the film and it really is fantastic. Dennis had a talent. Go to his website wecometoamerica.com He started off not being interested in this subject and was curious about a man protesting day laboreres outside of a 7-11 and he just started shooting. He got more and more into it and now he is now firmly against illegal alien invasion. It was funny, sad and riveting! You will love it!
Also, Doug Gill of WCBM radio is supposed to have him on as a guest- I believe on Monday night, 8/13. If you get onto Help Save Maryland's mailing list you will be informed if and when he is coming back.

No one looks into the abuse by indian IT companies and H1B workers. Qualified American are available and without job. These companies only hire cheap indians from india. American applicants are systematically rejected and only Indian visa holders are hired. At present being US citizen is a curse to find job in IT. These workers do not contribute anything to US economy and transfer most of the money back to their own country. Some of the workers are brought on B1 visa and pay them in India at lower rate. thus do not pay any US taxes.

They had no right bringing children into this world and expect others to support them. Not fair to anybody here. I see the parents using and abusing our systems.. Casa de md and other groups teach them how to work day jobs by connecting them with employers at their several day labor camps to work day cash jobs. If taxes are taken out of their salaries its very little because they claim many dependants and most don't have that many dependants. You must of read the recent story about illegals getting billions back in tax returns because of their many claimed dependants they don't have. . All of it is illegal and employers committing a felon by hiring and renting to them.The parents elect to stay undocumented because its more beneficial to them to not become citizens. I am also the result of immigrant parents and grandparents. Quite different scenario.. They came to america for a better life and no welfare involved. they worshiped our lands and their homes and our flag and wouldn't consider having any children until they could afford them and not rely on others to support them. They were to proud for that..

If the intent of this movie is to educate the dumbed down public why not post the film on line and share the link for all to see Michelle Jefferson?
If this was a private deal then I would say that the intent was to fuel the mob mentality of this local group.

To have to call someone to borrow a copy seems odd and very limiting. This is a film worthy of an Oscar. I am a tough film critic. I have acted my whole life and done professional and semi professional work. An interesting turn of events- after the" ANSWER" kids left after five minutes (Yes CASTRO - your kids) of the first Maryland viewing on 8/7- they decided to turn up again at the 8/8 viewing in Rockville. This was a smaller space and people were sitting on the floor and had to be turned away. The kids had tape on their mouths for some symbol of not being heard. They warmed up to the movie as they watched it. They had pizza and talked to Dennis and wanted their pictures taken with him! He said they were nice kids. They have been sadly misdirected and USED by groups like CASA de MD and ANSWER.
The groups that are running Maryland are far leftist radical groups. Read this lilnk about massive welfare fraud going to illegal aliens in this state. Why do you think there are huge deficits every year? WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

Buck on his website he has clips you can watch for free.. i don't think it would go anywhere by making a you tube.. Not only is Dennis lynch exposing immigration issues, after the movie its open discussion time.. A time for people to be informed and educated and discuss. This movie received a standing ovation many times by all. It is bipartisan.. Many who watched had no idea this was happening. Many live in secluded areas and in counties where none of this is an issue. In Maryland if you drive through baltimore city and pg county you'll see..

amdactivist, Thanks for responding to my posts this morning, I believe that if the true mission of the video, your group, or any other group is to help save America, making the video available without a semi private scheduled showing or the need to make a purchase would be MUCH more effective approach. I look for this type of event in the community and didn't know about this one. If you really want to get the truth out there in the most cost effective way, simply post the video on line for all to view. Anything shy of this slights your own cause. Why wait or have to travel to the next limited showing?

He does not get paid for these events and REFUSES to take donations. His video is 19 bucks and with that he gives 2 free videos and asks people to share them- give them away. He told me that a very inexpensive rental film will be online in a few months. He works as a filmmaker. He has kids to feed. None of us are getting a dime. He is a smart guy. He is promoting this via grass roots. You can't get more grass roots than us.

Ok Judy, He doesn't get paid but does this to feed his kids...? If this is really a basic grass roots effort, what better way to be effective than to let it go viral?
He would also have a far greater opportunity to provide better for his children by letting-r- rip. The news media would pick up on it quicker...if it's really that good.
For all I know this guy could be an actor~ like yourself.
I am not the opposition here, I'm just tired of hearing about half assed agenda with monetary strings attached in the name of saving our country.

Buck. i am not affiliated with this show at all. Not up to me to make decisions on this film and he's not in it for money but informing. Most of the events will be free or very low cost to cover cost of hall/auditorium or where ever. He will also do very small groups and large.. and i don't belong to any specific group but attend many meetings to keep informed with all groups both democrat and republicans especially regarding our corrupt politicians and immigration issues and our tax $$ and jobs going to them.. I have had many issues with Patch...My latest issue after the issue where I could not post any reply is this....I no longer receive updates to any article I post on...I have NEVER touched my account....I DO however debate ferociously with the Occupy Patch Mob who Patch adores.....Buck Harmon being one of them.....If this were such a "secret viewing" Buck Harmon, perhaps you could tell us how it is Patch was able to be there to write and video this article??? And why is it that Patch did not alert it's readers about the viewing, since they felt it is such a controversial issue????

JoAnn, I respect your opinion on most topics but in this case you imply that I said the viewing was a "secret viewing"....those are your words, not mine. I happen to believe that illegal immigration is a bit of a problem for many,not all Americans. I don't know what the solution can be, but if as the trailer for this video suggests teaching the public can help, I would suggest getting the word out as soon as possible. The process of buying, renting or borrowing a perceived great video to learn from is slow and not sure. My point of getting it out there as efficiently as possible only lends itself to your cause. The stigma of the Patch Mob thing is something that your narrow mind has created as a result of your lack of education, and serves no purpose to help any cause. I can't answer the question about why Patch didn't post something about this particular viewing as I have no connection with them other than the participation on some of the blog issues. With education there should be no need for ferocious debate.

I was informed about this event the day it was happening because I received a mass email from the folks who planned to be there protesting. It is free for any organization to post community events in our community calendar and also free for any organization to post announcements on Patch. Users post their information themselves and it's very user friendly.

Yes JoAnn..it is easy to tell. The dream kids actually stayed for the Rockville showing. At least I give them credit for doing that instead of walking out when they saw something that they didn't like in the film like they did at the Carroll Co College showing. The illegal aliens actually said they didnt' want to live in America but were just coming here and senidn it all home. I knew a guy who told me how wonderful it was in Guatamala and that he and his father were building a HUGE ranch back in his country. He told me how wonderful Guatamala was. Meanwhile we have construction workers, drywall workers, etc who are losing their homes and can't make a living. In a addition to CASA de MD helping illegal alien to find jobs did you know that they actually TEACH courses in electrical work, plumbing, drywall etc to these illegal aliens?? Nice eh, JoAnne? It makes me furious and needs to stop.

One thing that can not be taught to many American construction workers is an instinctive good work ethic these days. I have been involved in the construction industry all of my working career and the work ethic of most human beings coming from Mexico and several other countries can't be beat by privileged Americans. This is why many don't get re-hired after our economy has tanked. Without a good work ethic the skills are pointless...especially in a bad economy.

Our community, Immigrants not going thru the proper process. We have drug problems vandalism and the immigrants participate, watch a crime and will not call the police! Nice to know neighbors you can’t talk to or watch each others back. Wow that's how a neighborhood works together. Criminals know they won’t call so thugs take over the community! When you try to do something all with any government level the person is excited to help only to reply later that there is nothing they can do. We get basic service from government. Only one's that support us and are our saviors Baltimore county police and maybe another man but we are still waiting on his actions. Then when a house is up for sale they will ask if the house for sale and if they will take 130K CASH for the 190K house. I have to get a loan for 15-30 years. Where do they get the cash from? Then we have one that came by a house for sale and started praying. I have no issue with anyone but I had to work for mine and no one ever gave me Cash to buy a house. I don't want the abuse of or American way or system crumble before my eyes. Oh in the past few weeks 3 dogs have been poisoned one died and these are the people that keep watch The dogs were 100% fit next thing there throwing up diarrhea lethargic, breathing hard we nursed then back to health. All 3 dogs had the same symptoms. We can’t walk the streets in the evening. Has anyone take notice if it’s the area’s that share the same zip with the city? see my pics!

Legal employers should be the focus here. If it weren't for legal employers hiring these human beings there would not be a problem. To make the focus target less fortunate human beings with ill sounding labels is an effort in the wrong direction. I blame all of the problem on the employers, and the efforts to stop the situation should be directed specifically on them. Bad law, politics, and greed driven legal employers are the problem, not the less fortunate individuals willing to work their asses off to improve their own life situation. The narrow mind focus on the workers will never change a thing.

Great points JoAnn, The focus on making this problem better should be concentrated equally on big, bad government AND the legal employers that seem to promote the entire problem...not on the less fortunate human beings seeking to improve their individual lives. Attacking the workers is an ass backward approach that will NEVER work as long as the government , and legal employers participate willingly. It's like treating a drug addiction problem with more drugs.

licensing boards and unions are to blame for the lousy work ethic...they do nothing but snuff out competition all in the name of public protection and do little, very little of that...once again the ball drops at the foot of the government....and not every construction worker is lazy...I've met many who are extremely hard workers and have lost their jobs to illegals...why? Because the employer pays the illegal under the table, pays a smaller hourly wage, skips on the FICA taxes, unemployment insurance, health insurance and the list goes on...

JoAnn, I am on your team believe it or not, I don't have a problem with this type of movie at all! If the movie is as effective as is being promoted just think that it should be made available to all as quickly as possible. Selling, renting, or having to attend special showings only limits and lessens the potential to be effective. It's like trying to drive 200 yards with a pitching wedge. I'm a results oriented guy and believe that monetary considerations are getting in the way of progress here. Government corruption must be acted upon swiftly at any cost at this point .
If the movie introduced here is as good as you and others say....I say put it to work on a grand scale and force it to go viral...it doesn't cost anything. No building rental, staff pay, gas or travel expenses. Let the tool do it's job as quickly as possible.

there was a former ICE agent that was interviewed by Dennis....He put it in the true light that everyone should consider. He said, "If there was a burglar in your house and you called the police for help, how would you feel if the police said...we cannot help you...and as a matter of fact, not only can we not help you, even though your tax dollars pay us to do so, you must feed, cloth, house, school and provide health care for that burglar". Illegal immigration is a big problem, no doubt. But Buck is right about 1 thing, many Americans do not have the work ethic of our southern neighbors. Two stores, one I admittedly heard second hand:
(1) A friend is a former INS agent. A few years ago he was on a raid at a facility where they handpick crabmeat out of shells for canning. Tedious work. The INS found 30 illegal workers and loaded them onto a bus. An agent saw a group of unemployed men hanging out on the corner and, trying to do them a favor, went over to tell them a bunch of jobs just opened up. They thought he was crazy and said "We aren't doing that s*** work." He came back and told my friend "I think we are deporting the wrong people."
(2) a client of mine owns a nursery/landscaping business and every year LEGALLY hires 4 or 5 guest workers from Mexico, paying fees and transportation. Each year he must advertise these jobs in the Sun for 6 months to make sure no American wants them (these are not great jobs, but not min. wage either, about $11-$12 an hour). In 10 years, including the last few high unemployment years, he never has more than 2 or 3 people call about the job, and in all that time only 1 American showed up for work--and he left after 3 hours, saying the work was too hard. So, are these Mexicans taking American jobs? Who is going to do this work that Americans feel is "too hard?" My client spends a lot to legally get his guest workers--how many small businesses cant afford that?

watch the movie Kathy....there are thousands of Americans who will do the work....s very cold man standing in the middle of a small Colorado town with a sign on his neck comes to mind....He ISN'T receiving ONE entitlement from government...He is too proud....to say that a group of unemployed men, who very well could've been working white collar jobs, and are now able to collect a decent portion of that for TWO YEARS should give that up for a ten dollar per hour job is not looking hard at this issue....In my business, my unemployment rate quadrupled under Martin O'Malley and his DLLR....Yet the same DLLR and my delegate in south Carroll along with my state senator has done NOTHING about an issue I proved was happening in my licensed industry with respect to underground industries and underreporting of income.....and these were conservatives....not to say that many democrats are aware of this, because they ultimately call the shots, but the point is, I have shown an error in their enforcement that is the direct cause of tax fraud and it seemed rather unimportant to Annapolis. And as I sit here and type this please know that EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF THE CARROLL COUNTY DELEGATION is aware of this problem and have done NOTHING!!! The government has created this poor work ethic you complain about...To say that we should deport Americans over illegal immigrants is absolutely mind boggling.......

The McDonalds in Easton employees 2 confessed illegals. A disgruntled past employee claims the manager knows they are illegal and helped them get around documents required for employment and one of them has worked under 2 different names and social security numbers. She had worked there for 3 years and claims she was fired because she informed her employer of the illegals numerous times. My follow up was to send a letter, pictures of the alleged illegals, a copy of immigration law pertaining to employment of illegals and sanctions of employers that employ them as well as a call to the employer ( Hoff Companies ). One month later and the illegals are still working for the employer. My report to ICE will be detailed including the address of the illegals. One job at a time. Inch by inch we can move closer to deportation of many illegal aliens if we walk the walk not just talk the talk. Keep the faith my western friends. Caroline County Blake Sutherland

If there are thousands of Americans who will do the work, why can't my client get ONE? He would much rather hire Americans, then spend the time and money he does every year to get legal guest workers--but it is not happening. I realize that unemployed white collar workers are not going to do $12 an hour jobs, but I have never heard any rational person say that the big problem with illegal immigration is that these people are crossing the border and taking high paying white collar jobs away from American citizens. I am talking about the low paid, manual labor, that most Americans will not do. Is this "proud Colorado man" willing to work as a fruit picker or something similar? There are plenty of those jobs available, but I wouldn't do them, would you?

And good Lord, no one is saying we should deport Americans! The point is, that we are (or were) deporting people who would do jobs that many Americans wouldn't take. Money is not necessarily the issue--there are plenty of people working minimum wage at Wal Mart and fast food places. The jobs that businesses are having trouble filling with Americans are the hard labor, outdoor, dirty, and sometimes dangerous jobs that these illegals are willing to take.

I don't know what your "licensed industry" was, but maybe Dennis can do a movie about small business people who are trying to keep their business running but are having trouble hiring people.

Then why is the focus on the people that come here to work hard to improve their lives and NOT at all on the government. I think that this movie and all efforts that focus on the workers only prolong the agony of the problem. When the focus and energy is primarily on the workers the government feels a lot less heat and therefore has no real degree of urgency to address the problem....the illusion continues. Take the focus off of the workers and place it all on those that have allowed and continue to allow it to happen.
All of the numbers~dollars mean nothing when the focus is primarily on the hard workers. Really a dumb approach with very limited results....like peeing into the wind if you will.

That's good to hear JoAnn, I can never fault any human being for doing whatever is necessary to provide a good life for their family...where ever that may be on this earth.
Our country, via government and employers created this great opportunity, not the workers. Buck, the government has no real will to solve this issue--we can debate the reasons for that, but unless the government gets serious about stopping the flow of illegal immigrants into the county (and punishing the employers who hire them), individual action, like turning in two guys who work at a McDonald's, is going to be futile. As long as there are available jobs here and the possibility of a better life, hard working people are going to continue to make that dangerous crossing into the US. (Which of us wouldn't do the same in their situation?)

Erica the movie is a documentary using real people and their own words. As far as the Dream Act that isn't mentioned in the movie but let me enlighten you with some facts that i'm sure are hidden from you by casa and others. the facts are in Md that we educate "All" children using our tax $$ to about $1billion a year through grades 12. Md is now 4th highest taxed state in the country because of it and other issues regarding illegal aliens. Now the Dream act is for kids 18-80 and again they want my tax $$ to subsidize their college education which will cost millions or more in Md. My granddaughter is a u.s. citizen in md. She wants to go to VA tech to study for veterinarian. She can NOT get instate tuition there although her parents and grandparents are forced to pay for illegals in our own state. The parents of these children came to our country and elected to stay undocumented even though we paid Big bucks through our tax $$ to raise their children with our $$ through welfare and benefits, medicaide etc while they worked our jobs.. continued>

I am also here as the result of immigrant grandparents and great-grandparents. They worked hard, never took welfare, were proud to be Americans (and became Americans as soon as they were allowed)--but I can't say that they didn't consider having any children until they could afford them. My grandmother once told me "If people waited to have children until they could afford them, nobody would ever have them!" Unless you are celibate or willing to terminate a pregnancy, sometimes children just happen.

Yes, we should do what we can to tighten our borders and make sure that people who are here are here legally. But I cannot stomach punishing an innocent child who was born here and has been here 10 years or so, for the transgressions of his or her parents.

The 14th Amendment says that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.” That sentence does not say "“All persons born . . . in the United States WHOSE PARENTS ARE subject to the jurisdiction thereof. . .", If a person is born here, and THEY are subject to the jurisdiction of the US, meaning that they are physically present here or claim citizenship, then they are a US citizen. Like it or not, error or not, this is what our Constitution says.

I have read and studied both, along with the Constitution and many of the transcripts of the ratification debates. I may disagree which some of it, but that doesn't change what the plain language of the Constitution says. When the 14th amendment was first written, it was taking into account that the Indian populations were considered at that time to be completely separate from the United States even though they resided on US soil. They were not subject to the jurisdiction of the US government because they were considered separate sovereign entities. Anyone who is in this country now, legally or illegally, is subject to the jurisdiction of the United States government (except those with diplomatic immunity). If an illegal alien kills someone, he isn't punished in the country from which he is from- he is punished here under our jurisdiction. If he earns money here, he is subject to paying taxes here. Not owing allegiance to anybody else also means not claiming citizenship of another sovereign nation. So if a child born here, is living here and does not claim citizenship of his parents home county, they ARE subject to the complete jurisdiction of the US. Having a heritage is not the same as having allegiance. I am proud of my Irish and Danish heritage, but I have no allegiance to those countries. You cannot change the plain meaning of words to mean what you want them to mean.

Since when does the United States worry about what other countries think? I believe that only a few countries allow the unrestricted purchase and carrying of firearms--a few that come to mind are Cuba, North Korea, and certain Islamic countries (although there, those rights are allowed only to Muslims). [And I realize that this is not an exhaustive list, before you start jumping all over it]. We are not suggesting that we amend our Constitution to delete the Second Amendment just because most countries don't agree. Do they have it right and we few countries have it wrong?

Our country was founded as a nation of immigrants, and our 14th Amendment reflects that.

And Bingham 's statement supports the interpretation of the 14th Amendment that ALL persons born in the US, and not owing a foreign allegiance, are citizens. He is saying (with a lot of double negatives) that the Congress has NO right to say that someone born in the US and not owing a foreign allegiance is a citizen of the US. Incidentally, his statements were made during debates in support of the doctrine that the individual states could not deny citizenship to individuals born in the US just because they had formerly been slaves.

Yes, with some exemptions to certain laws to accommodate their religious beliefs, the Amish are subject to the jurisdiction of the United State government. If they murder another Amish person, they are tried by the government, not by Amish courts. They must obey the traffic laws. They do pay income taxes and property taxes, but they are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes because their religion forbids "insurance." (They cannot collect SS or Medicare either). , So yes, the approximately 200,000 Amish in this country (representing maybe .06 of 1% of its citizens,) are not subject to ALL of the federal/state laws. The president of the US has immunity from civil lawsuits and criminal prosecution while in office (which is why Clinton had to be impeached to try him). This does not mean that the president of the US is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.

By the way, the use of one question mark is sufficient punctuation to indicate that you are asking a question. Unless that key on your keyboard is sticking?

Kathy I am very angry at the system and corrupt politicians who cater to illegals with our jobs, benefits and money. over 1 million foreclosures a year to our citizens because of illegals. I am in pain 24/7 because of an illegal with a legit md drivers license who also votes.. I am an activist against corrupt politicians and anything concerning ILLEGAL aliens who break our laws and cost us money.. My immigrant family from and i'm sure yours didn't break all the rules like the illegals are..I am very upset.. omalley says its a federal issue which is bs. Federal issues are enforceable at local levels. O'malley and others take kickbacks from large employers that hire them. At least 7 out of 10 are undocumented in md. Many are overstayed visa workers but none the less they shouldn't be here..

It is beyond understanding how someone who shouldn't be in the US can get a drivers license here. When my brother in law came from Ireland in the 1980s (he was engaged to my sister but they couldn't wait so he came here as a tourist a year early and just stayed quietly until after the wedding) he couldn't legally work, and couldn't get a NY driver's license (although he had his Irish license, so I guess he was legally driving). We lived in fear of INS actually knocking down the door of the apt and deporting him, which we heard they did to other Irish living and working in NY. Is there no enforcement anymore in the US, or is this just a Maryland thing?
But lest you think ill of my brother in law, he is a registered resident alien, has been married to my sister over 25 years, has worked and paid taxes all that time, sent two kids to college, and volunteered for years in his community. Ok, technically he did come here illegally. But had he been deported, I think that his community and our country would be the worse for it. Shouldn't there be some provision for other immigrants who came illegally but have been good "citizens"?
As far as corruption, I don't know if there are actual kickbacks being paid, but I'm sure big corporations that rely on illegal immigrant labor have used their influence to stop enforcement actions. That is where actions should be focused.
Sorry if this response seems complicated, but this is a complicated issue.

I think that the Tea Party has a lot of good ideas, and certainly some good intentions. But too often these are drowned out by angry insults, incoherent error-filled rantings, and lack of credibility in the sources they cite. Posting a link to an internet blog filled with hate-filled invective written by a person with no credentials in the field except the irrational certainty that his/her baseless opinions are gospel handed down by God is not a good method of trying to prove your argument. As far as this so called "Occupy Patch Mob" (that you so politely call "trolls") I only assume that you are referring to the very few people on here who do not agree with everything you say. I find that, at least on this Patch, Tea Partiers far outnumber anyone with a different point of view. At least Mr. Harmon makes an attempt to be balanced and to understand the nuances of the issues discussed.

BTW I too am an Independent--fiscally conservative but socially moderate. I don't like either candidate for President, but I have not missed an election since I have been 18, so I will just vote for the lesser of two evils.

If the movie is as effective as is being promoted just think that it should be made available to all as quickly as possible. Selling, renting, or having to attend special showings only limits and lessens the potential to be effective. It's like trying to drive 200 yards with a pitching wedge. I'm a results oriented guy and believe that monetary considerations are getting in the way of progress here. Government corruption must be acted upon swiftly at any cost at this point .
If the movie introduced here is as good as you and others say....I say put it to work on a grand scale and force it to go viral...it doesn't cost anything. No building rental, staff pay, gas or travel expenses. Let the tool do it's job as quickly as possible.

Sigh. If you had actually read my post, and understood it, you would have seen that I was quoting George Clemenceau (a very famous quote by the way) the Prime Minister of France during WWI. His point, and mine, was that young people are idealistic and not very rational, and so he was not surprised that his son embraced Communism when he was young, but if he still believed that way when he was 30, it would mean that he hadn't learned anything about the world.

I did cite my source. And that is what those little " " marks mean.

My son is only 14 and so does not really believe in anything but what he has been taught. Although he is smart enough to recognize a quote when he reads it.

Yes, unfortunately that is true. But although primaries are important, they are not "elections." But maybe I should have said that I have never missed an election for which I was eligible to vote, because obviously I have also never voted in an election in a state in which I did not reside.

This year, the presidential primaries were only important to the Republican candidate.

I would love to live in a world where everyone only thought of other people, and all rights were protected, and the government wouldn't need to be involved. When no employer discriminates, when everyone protects the environment, when there is no crime, when all businesses can be trusted to treat everyone fairly and not to exploit people, resources, etc.,when everyone donates enough money to fund schools and take care of the poor and elderly, well then we won't need the government. When that happens, I will be the first in line to cheer, and will spend my saved taxes on a nice trip to Tahiti. Until then, I guess I am stuck paying the price of a civilized society.

Fiscally conservative does not mean we should slash all spending, only that we should spend wisely. It does not meant that we shouldn't pay taxes, only that we should pay a reasonable amount according to our ability. Socially moderate does not necessarily mean that government should get involved in all social issues, only that people should be free to live their lives without interference, as long as they are not hurting someone or the environment. It also means that, as Jesus taught, we have an obligation to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Yes. Why don't the presidential candidates bother to campaign in Maryland? Because they know the state will go to Obama, just like they know Texas will go for Romney. The votes of the other party in those states are not heard. Why should someone who gets 51% of a state get 100% of the vote. The purpose of the EC was because the Founding Fathers did not trust the people to decide an election. I think we should have that right.

I find it interesting that none of the serious local Tea Party members step up to the plate regarding this issue. Perhaps JoAnn and amdactivist have thoroughly embarrassed the group with repeated silliness in these rants. Or maybe they are all like this....who knows? I would certainly not want them on my team fighting for any cause.... they drive people with much to offer away.

Buck--I have considered attending a meeting--despite what SOME people think I am in sympathy with many of their goals. But after this experience I feel like if I said anything I would be jumped all over by people who are not looking for intelligent give and take but for an opportunity to make themselves feel proud of having a "gotcha" moment. Even if such a moment comes from their own interpretation (and possibly misunderstanding) of an historical document. It is like trying to debate a middle school student who just replies "Duh!" to everything you say--frustrating and futile. But I do have a few friends who are active in the Tea Party and they are not like this--they are intelligent and civil and respectful of other ideas and a pleasure to speak to. I hope that you get to meet some of them.

Democracy Kathy....for your reading pleasure.....In a Republic, the sovereignty resides with the people themselves.  In a Republic, one may act on his own or through his representatives when he chooses to solve a problem. The people have no obligation to the government; instead, the government is a servant of the people, and obliged to its owner, We the People.  Many politicians have lost sight of that fact.

A Constitutional Republic has some similarities to democracy in that it uses democratic processes to elect representatives and pass new laws, etc.  The critical difference lies in the fact that a Constitutional Republic has a Constitution that limits the powers of the government.  It also spells out how the government is structured, creating checks on its power and balancing power between the different branches.

The goal of a Constitutional Republic was to avoid the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy but what exists in America today is a far cry from the Constitutional Republic our forefathers brought forth.

A very educational publication that I believe every American citizen should indulge in.
I educate myself regarding the Constitution and our Constitutional public in ways that you probably can't imagine. I do believe that some of the rants put forth by you do a dis service to those that have truly committed to the fight to maintain our Constitutional Republic. You can educate without the harsh attitude toward anyone that questions your opinion. If you were mature with your knowledge of the Constitution, more would listen...the silliness is very limiting.

The message of personal responsibility resonates with a lot of Americans. I have tea party friends, that doesn't mean I agree with everything they believe in. I am able to be friends who people don't agree in lockstep with everything I do. If you think that I am a radical leftist--I can't stop laughing as I write that--then obviously your politics are so far to the right that Nixon and Regan would be radical leftists. And anyone with a 6th grade education could read that I am not saying that my friends will be footnotes in history, but the Tea Party. Not that I necessarily want this--but it is inevitable. the immigration issue looks at all problems....but this is not about outsourcing jobs to India where they are done for a cheaper price.
