What Would You Like to See in the Vacant Wheeler Building?
What would you like to see in this vacant building located on Rt. 27 in Westminster?
The former Wheeler Building, located at 112 Railroad Ave. (Rt. 27) was last used as a car dealership but has been vacant for several years.
Tell us in comments, what would you like to see in the former Wheeler Building?
The previous board of Commissioners planned to give the building to the nonprofit health clinic Access Carroll for their expansion efforts but the current board of Commissioners changed those plans with hopes of selling the property. The property remains vacant. Access Carroll will be expanding into a different space on Distillery Drive where Human Service Programs (HSP) is housed.
The former Wheeler Building has a total of 23,590 square feet on three levels, with 1.51 acres of land, most of which is paved, according to a county document.
In the spring of 2011, the county put the property on the market with the note, "bids under $1,500,000 will not be accepted."

They had a chance to rent the building, with the option to buy, for a Pennsyvania Dutch Farmers market type business, but would not rent it to the party involved, now it still sits empty. The spaces were all rented out and ready to go, but they got cut off at the knees, thanks to the commissioners. Our government at work......

Was just thinking that Westminster needs a place called "Date Night" putt-putt, bowling, dancing, music, cafe, for kids until say unitl 10 o'clock and adults after that. nicely done and high end if possible. Just a thought.

Claire, a friend of mine suggested to me some time ago that it should be a Karaoke disco bar :) Not sure that would fly in Westminster, but would certainly be a fun place for a date.

Did the Commissioners provide a reason not to rent it to the Market business?

I suggest a Workforce Training Center for the Trades - Manufacturing, Welding, HVAC, OSHA Safety, etc. where Carroll Community College and partners could deliver both entry level and advanced skills training for county businesses and agencies.

Try a Museum for Westminster or Carroll County. We have a rich history here if people would just use it.

While they're waiting to sell it, it would nice to see it rented - maybe some short term contract? I wonder if they have been approached by anyone other than the ones mentioend above. Some income from it would be better than no income.

I would like to see the Commissioners move their main offices there. They would hvae more room . Also since Rob-em Faizier did not like the Governor's picture hanging in the lobby of the County office building. Plus the fact she wanted to start a bible class , I think it would be proper to turn over that building for strictly the Commissioners use. Also if the State Legislature would ever pass the non-profit casino legislation, that would be aperfect location for the county to hold casino nites there .

Will someone please tell me , why was this building was purchased ? I may be wrong , I understand it was to move the Sheriff's office there. If that is right, what happen to that idea?. Was it not good enough for the Sheriff's offoce? If the county cant use this building, the Commissioners ought to place this building at a public auction.

I think it would be a perfect location for Ms. Frazier to hold her church services there. She could also move her Commissioners office there plus be the preacher. Carroll County could get the credit for having the only church and government related building in the United States. Since Ms. Frazier hates to pay personnel for their services, she can also select volunteers for Carroll County government work. Ms Frazier knows about voluntarism, a similar job she held under the Ehrlich Administration when she worked for the State Of Maryland, after she lost her bid for re-election as Commissioner several years ago. Since she does not like to see Governor Martin O'Malley's picture hanging on the lobby of the Carroll County Office building, I suggest she find the largest picture of her self qnd hang it on this building lobby and rename the building "THE FRAZIER BUILDING."
