Young Athletes Work Hard, Have Fun at the Kids Adventure BOOathlon

Kids from across the mid-Atlantic region gathered in Mount Airy this weekend to run, bike, climb, jump and guess their way to the finish line.

This is one way to burn off some of those calories that kids are going to rack up during Halloween season.

One hundred and twenty youth athletes participated in the second annual Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill's Farm Market in Mount Airy. Children from across Maryland as well as Virginia and Pennsylvania participated in the event on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Presented by the Mini Cow Tri Club, the Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill’s Farm Market combines the running and biking of a traditional duathlon with the challenges of an adventure race according to coach and club co-founder Christy Lausch.

Children ages 6 to 14 ran .75 miles, biked 2 miles and then ran .5 miles all within the Knill’s Farm Market property in Mount Airy. In between the running and biking segments of the race children faced physical and mental challenges including climbing over five feet of stacked straw bales and jumping across large tractor tires, to guessing the number of Halloween candies in a candy jar and answering event related questions to pass through a corn maze.

The Mini Cow Tri Club is the first youth focused USA Triathlon Club in Maryland, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices through multisport with an emphasis on fun Lausch said.

The Mini Cow Tri Club also produces the Nottingham Kids Triathlon held in Mount Airy in August. In 2012, the Nottingham Kids Triathlon will be the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Youth Regional Championship.
