Grammy Winners Fun. Coming to Merriweather in Columbia

Also, Grammy nominees The Lumineers will play the following weekend.

  Hot off their Best New Artist win at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, Fun. recently announced a live performance July 20 at Merriweather Post Pavilion. The indie rock band from New York City also won the Song of the Year Grammy for their catchy hit "We Are Young." At the Grammys, Fun.'s Nate Ruess, 30, joked, "I don't know what I was thinking writing the chorus for this song. If this is in HD, everybody can see our faces, and we are not very young," as the band accepted the award for Song of the Year. Tickets for Fun. go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. on Ticketfly. Aberdeen Resident Competing On American Idol

American Idol kicked off its latest season Wednesday night on FOX.

Could an Aberdeen singer become the next American Idol? Kriss Mincey hopes so. The local singer is currently competing on Season 12 of American Idol. "I'm originally from Baltimore, MD, by way of Aberdeen, MD," Mincey said in an introductory video. Watch the video, included with this post. "Nothing gives me more joy than being on stage," she said.  Kriss is Los Angeles-bound after getting by the judging panel in New York. Liberty and Century Drama Clubs Win Awards at State Thespian Festival

As the 2013 state champion, Liberty will be performing the play on the national stage in Lincoln, Nebraska in June.

Drama students from Liberty and Century High Schools received numerous awards at the Maryland State Thespian Festival on Jan. 11 and 12. Students competed for scholarships and the opportunity to compete at the National Theatre Festival. Liberty High School students Courtney Jarmush, Christy Czajkowski, and Emily Nupp each received a $32,000 scholarship from Rowan University. Bridget Lindsay won a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice in the Technical Scholarship Competition for her set design for “Tarzan.” Six students achieved ratings of superior in their individual events and are among only 15 students in the state who will advance to the national competition: Three of these students – Anne Devine, Christy Czajkowski, and …

Arts Council Closed through Sunday for Cosmetic Updates

The Carroll Arts Council is getting a good freshening up this week.

The Carroll Arts Center will be closed through Sunday, Jan. 13 for cleaning and cosmetic improvements. Arts Center Executive Director Sandy Oxx said that the improvements include a "major cleaning and reorganizing" among other projects that include: Oxx said that in the spring they will focus on exterior projects, including repairs from water damage, fixing the marquee, and adding an overhang to the loading dock.  "Without a doubt--it's not sexy stuff, and a lot of it the public won't even notice it, but it is very important maintenance," Oxx said.  The updates are being paid for with Arts Council reserve funds, a Self Help grant from County Recreation & Parks and a Facade Improvement Grant from the city of Westminster, according to Oxx. …

'Beauty' Unveiled at Carroll Arts Center

This exhibit will present the works of seven women who create in various media and diverse styles.

The Tevis Gallery at the Carroll Arts Center will feature an exhibit entitled “Beautiful” from January 15 to March 15. The exhibit will highlight the work of seven female artists. According to a Carroll Arts Center news release, elegant formal portraits and classically inspired sculpture by Kateryna  Dovgan will be juxtaposed next to the bold, painterly brush stroke figurative work of Sherrill Cooper.  Lisa Sheppard’s masterful use of pastel and watercolor perfection by Lucille Kerns, and the oil masterpieces of Cris Wenderoth and meticulously acrylic vistas of Darlene Jones give viewers a look and landscape, cityscape and seascape.  The bold color and shape in Felisa Flecker’s paintings provides an abstract interlude for the show. Carroll Arts Council Announces Festival of Wreaths Winners

This year's annual event raised more than $20,000 for Arts Council programs.

The Carroll Arts Center was abuzz with activity during its recent Festival of Wreaths.  An estimated 2,500 people visited the event which featured 203 uniquely themed wreaths.  The wreaths were created by individuals, businesses and clubs and were offered to the public in a week-long silent auction which raised $20,200 for the Arts Council.  The public voted on their favorites and the winners are as follows:  Grand Prize: “Puff the Magic Dragonfly” by Nick Vincent of Nathan’s Forge President’s Choice Award: “Count your Blessings” by the McHugh Family Director’s Choice Award: “Sprigs of Holly” by Jayma Martin Kessing Staff Favorite Award: “Hands of Hope” By Service Coordination and Ain’t That a Frame Sponsors Choice Award (Carroll County …
