BLOG: Winning for the Bay

By Beth Blauer, Director of StateStat

We have exciting news. We just found out that our video on our strategic goal to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay by the end of the 2025 won a Telly Award as an outstanding online video in the Green/Econ Friendly Category! Here’s the video in case you haven’t watched it yet. It’s a must see!

As a State we are always looking for ways to make progress on our shared strategic goals. Most importantly, we are looking for opportunities to engage the public in our work. Our award winning StateStat and BayStat programs allow the public to hold us accountable to these goals. By openly sharing our data and our analysis, anyone can track the progress we are making. Awards like the Telly Award help us shine an important light on the need to continue to protect our natural resources and confirm that our strategies are taking hold.

In our Bay Restoration work, together, we are making significant progress:

We’ve implemented effective policies to restore our Blue Crab population to record highs, used Program Open Space for its intended purposed and protected more than 36,000 acres of open space and invested more in the Chesapeake Bay Trust Fund to accelerate our progress. This past session, we continued to pass laws to help our environment including ones that restrict the use of septic systems and enable us to upgrade our waste water treatment plants.

I hope you enjoy the video and that you’ll share it with your family and friends. It will take all of us, working together, to restore the health of our most precious natural resource.

P.S. Stay tuned for an upcoming special day of service where you can get involved and help move us forward on our goals. Details to come.

The president and a pot head. Good choice of photos.

Buzz apparently some people are not color blind, and use terms that show there true color. Being color blind you can see who people really are and show their bigotry.

Not sure that I understand your point here...

Buck, he is referring to Steve's race and his numerous referrals to me as "And the angry old White man Strikes Again" (sic) - period missing and no need to use caps.

He is obsessed with me in some way. He has changed his name and photos numerous times. I know who he is though and what to expect from his comments.

He just can't let it go. I think I challenge his intellectual and when he gets frustrated he strikes out.

I have never, ever changed my name. Why would I call myself something I'm not.

What's my "intellectual" anyway "Professor"?

Buzz, you do not challenge anyone intellectually. I'm not sure how you challenge someone's intellectual? Ha-ha. You love correcting grammar, but we both know that you are horrible at writing. Let's use your post about the Fire Chief from a previous article. I think you said you sent him an "e-male"? Did you Buzz? Did you send him an electronic male? Ha-ha. Go back and look at it if you would like, you haven't deleted it yet, as you do with most of your horrible posts. I posted the link below for your review Buzz :) Stop trying to shift the focus from your lack of facts and detail, to the grammar of others. This is a blog and most people write to get their points across. This isn’t a Pulitzer winning piece. We both know you wouldn’t be involved in anything that prestigious.

2pac, (nice role model) I respond in kind. Yes I make typos many of them. You are doing exactly what you accuse me of. You write as much as I do and you're bound to make them. There are no copy editors on the comments page.

I would think since this is your first and only comment you would make sure it's clean, no mistakes. It's Pulitzer Prize, two words. Comments are not blogs. Where are your paragraphs. I see several that are missing. As I said, nice role model.

You can tell you're one of Steve's recruits, you laugh the same way the rest do.

We laugh at you Buzz. I do not know who Steve is, but he seems to make sense. You would think the patch would wise up and remove you, but just like AOL's poor decision to fund this thing, they must live with it.

This is a blog. It sure as hell isn't a news paper or credible source.

Fact of the matter is, you cite other sources such as the Baltimore Sun, New York Times and so on...in your articles because you do not actually investigate anything for yourself. For someone who claims to be an ex-cop, your investigation skills sure do suck!

Those who laugh first laugh last laugh first. Read my response with the appropriate links.

Did you just discover the word paragraph. It seems so. How do you propose I investigate these issues. listen to 2pac? Drive to NY and talk to the Times.?Travel around the globe?

Do you live in the city that reads or you just listen to 2pac.

Your choice of words shows your maturity level. It would suggest you hang down the Inner Harbor.

This is a blog for those who write blogs on it. I don't recall a blog by 2pac. What was the title?

Besides , which part of "angry, old, White man " doesn't apply? You tried to take a really nice blog about the bay and tried to turn it into a smear piece.

Is it so difficult to say "Great job Governor!"

I agree with you on that one Steve .It is IMPOSSIBLE to say "Great job Governor" in Maryland for the last 6 years !

From your own link:

"Heavy spring rains, a hot summer and two major storms caused the Chesapeake Bay's overall health to worsen last year,"

How does the Governor control "heavy spring rain, hot weather and two storms"??

This is also from the link: "Two other bay tributaries received failing grades in the new report card, Maryland's Patuxent River and Virgina's Elizabeth River in Norfolk. Dennison said the Patuxent, which flows from Central through Southern Maryland, shows troubling signs of decline, while the Elizabeth, with a legacy of pollution from a naval base, shipyards and industry, earned scientists' worst grades."

The D+ is the OVERALL grade on the health of the bay.

If there wasn't something of substance in the postings by Buzz others wouldn't focus on the attempt to dis credit him....why bother boys....Buzz fulfills his civic responsibility to always question and hold accountable elected officials.
He also seems to give credit where due.... who gives a rats ass about proper writing or blog technique... the point is always communicated clearly.
Oppose him with counter fact, rather than pointless jib a jabs....makes for better reading..

Buck thank you. You have always been a man of reason. It reminds me of my days on the road when you would stop someone for doing 90 on the Beltway and they would cuss at you.

It is challenging enough to believe anything that comes out of the Governor's mouth much less his many spokes persons' blog posts but when there is a report from the Governor or his administration that ends with Stat it is as sure to be misinformation as the summer solstice is long. Didn't the OweMalley administration learn their lesson with the proven falsehood of his famed CityStat? Now we have BayStat, StateStat, and I am sure there is a slew of other FakeStats that set out to prove what an incredible job our great absentee Governor is doing.

I think there should be a WhereDidTheMoneyGoStat to show where all the money from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund went when OweMalley and the General Assembly redistributed it throughout the general fund to balance their bloated overspending budgets. Perhaps if the money was actually used to help clean up the bay it might have earned a C- but sadly we will never know because in the end the democrats only like to pretend they are out to help "save the bay" by justifying new taxes like the roof and pavement tax and 100% tax increases as they did with the flush tax.

I can accept the President's redistribution of wealth from one group of citizens to another far easier than I can understand the Governor's redistribution of wealth from one state fund to another just to make his budget numbers allegedly balance. What I simply cannot accept are the lies and misinformation that continue to come out of Annapolis. For the children ...
