Hi, this is Tony Eckard. I am the finance manager for Carroll County Public Library. I want to introduce you to a great book we have at CCPL. It is Bryce Hoffman’s American Icon: Alan Mulally and the Fight to Save Ford Motor Company. While it chronicles the intriguing turnaround of Ford Motor Company, it offers a lot more than just a history.
This book is interesting from many perspectives.
Corporate managers and public administrators will all find this book a usable example of how vision and a reliable problem solving structure can accomplish organizational goals.
It is a study too of business and organizational relations, how to work with a board of directors, employees, unions, management, customers, policymakers, and competitors.
Students of contemporary economics will enjoy this perspective of the recent economic downturn and an unexpected case of rebirth in American manufacturing. Others will enjoy this study of the contemporary automotive industry, American and global.
So often we are only able to see cooperation and teamwork displayed in athletic settings. In American Icon, we see how a commitment to understanding one’s customers, creating a vision, and developing a work plan all plays out in one of America’s most recognizable companies.

“Opening the highways for all mankind”
One challenge that new Ford CEO Alan Mulally faced in 2006 was getting the company he was hired to lead to rally around a common purpose. I find the image and its caption to be an excellent example of a well written mission statement. Over the years I have been involved in writing mission statements with several organizations. It is always a challenge to capture the core purpose of complex organizations succinctly, but back in 1925 Ford did just that. Mulally seized the opportunity to refocus and reenergize Ford’s entire workforce.
