There is something about sharing a cup of coffee with someone that will make him open up even more than sharing a glass of cheer. Coffee and the right environment are the perfect lubricants for titillating conversations, truths revealed, and problems solved.
My life-long friend, Ed, came in to my coffee shop today and in the midst of his catharsis, stated to me “I don’t enjoy talking about myself.” And yet the conversation continued on all-things-Ed. I think he felt better in the end and left with his medium coffee and a spring in his step.
In my blog, I will chronicle the weekly happenings and interesting topics of my humble coffee shop, changing the world one good talk (and latte) at a time. Come on in and take a seat in the comfy chair, the doctor is in…

I'm thinkin' about coffee: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Let's start with "the ugly". It was 1988 along the east coast of Nicaragua. Hurricane Joan had wiped out much of the coffee crop. So to simulate coffee, the locals mixed ground up roasted corn with a bit of roasted coffee and called macaroni. If it hadn't been for my emergency jar of instant Nescafe, I'd still be in withdrawals. The Bad: that would have to be in the Greco-Egyptian Tobacco Co. along Queens Road in Hong Kong in 1967. Before Dean Minnich and I could look at smoking pipes, we had to consume a demitasse of the proprietor's sugared Turkish coffee. People joke about standing a spoon up in strong coffee—our spoons stood straight up. So while Dean occupied the merchant, I dumped both cups out the back door and avoided an international incident. And the Good: just a "shortie" cup of Sherri's house blend, straight up, no fufu flavors, steamed cream nor swirly dreams. The only thing better, honest, is Sherri's house salad with Howlin' Fred's gourmet salad dressing. As they say, "Fred's is the nicest thing for lettuce since chlorphyll."

Anyplace to get a good Turkish coffee? Everyone has espressos and cappuccinos now; I miss my Turkish coffees from when I was in Sarajevo and Bahrain.
