Franchot to Support Overturning Congressional Redistricting?

Comptroller Peter Franchot is expected to have a comment or two on the referendum on Maryland's Congressional redistricting maps during a radio appearance later today.

Franchot has never publicly spoken about the redistricting plan approved earlier this year but in a post on Facebook the comptroller hinted that he would "have much more to say on this subject this afternoon" during an appearance on WBAL 1090 AM and during a speech at the Institute of Internal Auditors' District Conference.

Franchot is trying to build himself a reputation as a political outsider.

During a speech last month at Goucher College, Franchot called for real-time campaign finance reporting.

Sources said Tuesday that Franchot is expected to use his radio appearance and speech to come out against the maps as they were drawn by Gov. Martin O'Malley and approved by the General Assembly.

A spokesman for the comptroller declined to comment on the Facebook post, radio appearance or speech.

The Comptroller's job is to collect taxes. His opinion on congressional redistricting is no more relevent or newsworthy than yours or mine.

Also, he is in no way a political outsider. I remember when he called into the Ed Norris show during the 2006 primary elections, and he said that as comptroller, if O'Malley was elected he would do everything he could to support O'Malley's initiatives, and if Ehrlich was elected he would do everything in his power to block Ehrlich's initiatives. Putting the politics of the former and current governor aside, it is hogwash for someone to even pretend to be an "outsider", when they previously agreed to vehemently support person A and block person B regardless of what the issue is. That's almost the definition of the political machine...

I trust Franchot almost as little as I trust O'Malley. This guy is the definition of a weasel.

I heard the WBAL piece and believe me, there are more things than just gerrymandering that should cause the state of Maryland enormous embarrassment. Much of what our elected officials do is very transparent to all except them. The only ones they are fooling are themselves. What I don't understand is why do they continue to be voted in? If we vote along party lines, instead of the issues (or don't vote), then I guess we get what we deserve.

Apathy Penelope, The vast majority don't vote, everyone involved in politics knows it, it's basically a matter of placing money at strategic points and working it until money runs out or.....a politician has been purchased and put in place...

They get voted in because of the districts they draw. It's a case of which came first, the chicken or the egg.

I'll say it again: Until the Republicans in other states stop playing the games with the redistricting, the Democrats have no choice but to do tit for tat.
