Helping Maryland’s Caribbean Community Succeed And Thrive

By Lt. Governor Anthony Brown

Governor O’Malley and I recognize that diversity is our greatest strength, and there is no limit to what we can achieve when we commit to working together.  Over the course of our nearly six years in office, we have launched numerous commissions to give a greater voice to diverse constituencies throughout our State.

Earlier today, I was honored to participate as the Governor signed an executive order creating a commission to help represent the issues of a group very close to my heart: Maryland’s Caribbean community.

My father came to America from Jamaica to escape poverty and pursue the American Dream.  He was able to receive a high quality education and became a doctor, serving some of the poorest residents in our community.

Many members of the Caribbean community in Maryland have similar stories and are giving back to our State in meaningful ways. As I traveled around the State meeting with members of the Caribbean community, from Jamaicans to Barbadians to Trinidadians and Tobagonians, it became clear to me that more could be done to infuse our State’s cultural tapestry with the best of our Caribbean heritage.

With Maryland’s Caribbean population growing rapidly, I raised with the Governor the need to increase outreach, public awareness, and education about key issues for the community.

By creating the Governor’s Commission on Caribbean Affairs–the first in Maryland’s history–we have made it clear that the issues that are important to our Caribbean population will be addressed at the highest levels of our Administration.

The Commission will expand outreach to engage individuals and organizations in the Caribbean community and help them form partnerships with State government in promoting our shared social, cultural, and business interests.

I am very grateful that Ambassador Curtis A. Ward, a Montgomery County resident and former Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations Security Council, has agreed to chair the Commission. He brings to this role a wealth of knowledge about the needs of Maryland’s Caribbean population.

Ambassador Ward will be joined by eight fellow commission members, reflecting the diverse ancestry and national origins of Maryland’s Caribbean community, representing different geographic regions in the State, and providing expertise on issues important to the State’s Caribbean population.

All Marylanders benefit by embracing those who wish to contribute to our State. I look forward to working with the Governor’s Commission on Caribbean Affairs to ensure that, like my father, members of the Caribbean community have the opportunity to succeed and thrive in Maryland.

If this was a dictionary this would describe the term propaganda. Case in point this quote from the article: "Governor O’Malley and I recognize that diversity is our greatest strength, and there is no limit to what we can achieve when we commit to working together."

What happened to the words UNITED States. We are one people united into a nation. I am an American, period.

Let's look at the word as defined:

"di·ver·si·ty
   [dih-vur-si-tee, dahy-] Show IPA
noun, plural di·ver·si·ties.
1.
the state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness.
2.
variety; multiformity.
3.
a point of difference."

A couple of words here - difference; unlikeness - that go directly against the grain of the great melting pot. Take a look at he UN. Remember any successful endeavor they've accomplished? They play chess on a daily basis. The nation Syria come to mind? Plenty of diversity in the UN.

http://www.colorado.edu/conflict/peace/example/croc1975.htm

How about politics? The D's and the R's. Lowest approval ratings in recent memory. Plenty of diversity there.

Here's a good article on the issue.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dion-nicole/worklplace-diversity-training_b_977846.html

Or this one:

http://www.theroot.com/views/npr-has-bigger-problems-juan-williams

We have over 300 languages spoken in the nation. I'm a little tired of hearing about the - preceding the word American, Mr. Brown.

Brook Hubbard

I think the problem is that some emphasize our differences to the detriment of our similarities. Some socio-political stances are so obsessed with promoting cultural diversity that they actually create wedges between groups.

There is a difference between promoting cultural awareness and being proud of traditions... and clinging to cultural behavior in fear of assimilation. The former promotes openness to experience and blends cultures into the "melting pot"; the latter creates xenophobia, bigotry, and divisiveness among a community.

For example, America has long had people coming to it and bringing their own cultures into the mix. American folk and country music has Scotch-Irish to thank for its sound. The cooking of Texas and the Southwest is the result of the Spanish and Native cultures of that area. Our children watch cartoons either from Asia or influenced by that style. These are all good examples how terminology, music, traditions, etc. have blended in and made us richer.

However, today some groups refuse to learn the majority language, refuse to associate with unrelated cultures, and remain in neighborhoods, churches, etc. where everyone is exactly like them. Special agenda groups promote this as "diversity" and demand we cater to this xenophobic behavior, when in reality this is "division" and is only making things worse.

If you want to be an American, then join America. Bring your culture into the fold. Don't hide it among those who are solely like you.

Brook a well written comment.

Baje, three major nations in Europe have stated that multiculturalism has failed. You speak of narrow minded when you answer a complex question with one sentence. Is that being narrow minded or ill informed?

Study history my friend and then build a time tested case.

Presently look to the Middle East and the friction there among not only the Jews and Palestinians, but the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, Russia and their issues, Pakistan, Africa and on and on.

You think this country is any different. Are race relations any different now than they were in the 70's. Utopia is one thing reality is another.

Look at the violence in the sports world, e.g. soccer. Human nature is human nature and when we can stop violence that I might say multiculturalism has a chance. Just because you say it does not mean it is so, unless of course you are in denial.

Now Norway. Does WW II bring to mind diversity during that time? They collaborated with the Nazi's. A lot of diversity there also. How many Jews were killed at the hands of the Norwegians?

You should watch the Military Channel or the History Channel on the events of WW II.

I'm sure Lafayette said more than that, but who cares. I'd rather take a look at what the Founding Fathers said, which is now being depressed and eliminated in the textbooks our children study. I'm all for multiculturism, and celebrating our diversity as a Nation. it's what made our nation great. Division strikes at the core and dooms it's participants to failure. i.e.:-the Civil War, racial disparity, and refusal to accept assimilation. On the other hand, O'malley, the ultimate politician with great expectations, will do anything for the vote! No committees were ever set up to see that the Poles, Czecks, Irish, Germans, etc.,etc. got a fair shake when they stepped foot on our shores. But, as he's done before with the Mexicans, whether legal or not, he jumped at the chance for more votes by extending Drivers License and Educational Benefits to that group. My final comment is "It's for the Vote, stupid" !!!

Friedhard, in order for you to make that statement did you read it? You would have to have knowledge of it to make the comparison to my comments.

The problem is with those like you and others who take issue with me is that they ignore two things; one is history and the other is that man is tribal. People fail to see the subtle similarities in other life experiences.

You experience it every day in your life without evening knowing it. Take for example your choice of food, clothing, religion, sports, medicine, jobs, and any other personal choice. If it has no baring then why are there various words still listed in our vocabularies such as Latino, Irish, German, Russian, Muslim, Catholic, Atheist and so on.

The Olympics don't have many sports listed in their events from various countries. It is a matter of choice, their choice.

Look I'm not going to berate you but please don't put words in my mouth.

Do you attend a variety of churches, eat a different ethnic food every day?

Before you take me on invest $19.95 in one of those Ronco knife sharpeners. Your comparison is just a tad week. Names like Stalin, Hitler Pol Pot, and thousands like them, killed for a variety of reasons, mostly out of paranoia not over multiculturalism.

Read someone like Brook or ATC who can articulate a point of view.

You also might want to take a look at the animal kingdom, by which we are a part of and don't bring religion into it.

I think we should note that part of the problem in this debate is a misunderstanding of what "multiculturalism" means. Different definitions, usages, and approaches create miscommunications that lead to heated debate when neither side really understands what the other is saying.

Multiculturalism is a positive apsect when used to describe something, like a neighborhood, city, or even country. This usage simply means that cultural diversity is present, which is not a bad thing. Multiculturalism develops a political tone when it represents policies or agendas that promote diversity and equal rights.

To be clear, a better approach toward diversity is ~interculturalism~. Interculturalism is about creating a common culture that envelops everyone elses. Certainly people can be proud of their heritage and traditions, but they must also assimilate with the central culture of their nation. Similarly, that common culture changes over time as it assimilates the others. In the end, however, assimilation and adaptation is necessary to maintain a singular identity rather than a disparate group of cultures conflicting with each other.

I am perplexed by this constant questioning of the diversity and multiculturalism in our great country. Have we ever NOT BEEN a multiculturalistic society? Is it not part of the golden secret of our greatness? Sadly, when the darlings try to politicize it then we are walking on thin ice...not of our making mind you, but the making of power agenda moguls....turning beautiful waters to mud and then stepping forward in an omnipotent way to save us all!!! So very, very tiring.

Lorna, this is the problem in terminology I remarked about. The concept of the "Melting Pot", which America long prized itself upon, is not the same as Multiculturalism.

Multiculturalism (as a sociopolitical term) focuses on legislation and agendas that encourage many different cultures retaining their identity but living side-by-side. Multiculturalism is actually in direct contradiction to "the Melting Pot", which follows closer to Assimilationism or Interculturalism. Multiculturalists claim that "the Melting Pot" will destroy cultural identities and that to force assimilation is oppression.

On the other hand, "the Melting Pot" metaphor describes a culture created from the blending of a variety of cultures. Assimilationists believe that blending together actually ~removes~ prejudices and makes the central culture stronger. Interculturalists recognize the need to maintain cultural identity but also the need to assimilate life styles enough to follow the central culture.

There is a big difference between "the Melting Pot" and Multiculturalism. The former encourages a blending of cultures within a central society that unifies all. The latter encourages minority groups to retain their identity at the cost of conflict and division of society. What America prided itself on being is not what it actually is anymore.

Buzz Beeler

11:07 pm on Friday, June 8, 2012

Lorna, the trouble with this issue is not a freedom of choice by one, but rather a political correctness that demonizes anyone who takes exception to a certain agenda. Take for example the Clinton's, despite the fact that bellowed his office was in Harlem he lives the most exclusive white part of the state.

Ahhh nothing like growing up around Lithuanian, Italian, Jewish, French, Cuban, Irish, English, German, on and on, and on....adds so much flavor to everyone's lives and for the politicos who insist otherwise we love the difference and enjoy learning from each other all the while enjoying pride in our various ancestory roots. Once again....politics raises its nosey little head for whatever agenda is on the books currently and do so much harm... time now to just cool it!!!. Another example of the death by a thousand stings being put upon our wonderful citizens from all over the world. Lorna, I'm not sure you even read what I wrote. I stated that "the Melting Pot" is a ~positive~ ideal, one where cultures blend together into an enhanced unified society.

I ~support~ Interculturalism, a philosophy that espouses learning and communication between different cultures while recognizing the need for a common, central culture. Each individual has the right to maintain their own cultural identity while also having an obligation to follow the central tenets of the unified society.

I ~cannot~ support Multiculturalism, which espouses the promotion of cultural groups without said obligation toward a common culture. With no central society from which to draw language, law, etc., you end up creating a divided society where conflict can (and does) arise.

It appears that the Democrats and their Hollywood and Union buddies are doing something that Republicans could not accomplish on their own - elect Romney.
Even with Romney spotting Obama about 15 points with the minority vote, Romney could pull this off.
Don't understand the local and national stategies by the Dems - this blog case in point - let's bring ourselves together - by identifying yet another underprivileged group. The answer no matter where you come from is simple, educate yourself, learn to read, write and speak properly and look presentable in public - presto you will do well in life.
We have the Os saying we need more public sector hiring? For what. We have Axelrod completely out of control. I have to believe non political folks watch him and think - this guy is just not right. Don't know why the Dem leadership does not see he needs to be off TV - his appearance and manner just hurts them.
Romney's plan seems to be stay on message and let the liberal media develop issues that hurt Obama even more.
Not sure about Romney either, but things are breaking his way.

Ed your lack of a perspective broader than that provided to you by The Sun or MSNBC speaks volumes of your lack of a truly logical understanding of the issues. When conservatives or even moderate Republicans and Democrats come out to vote for someone other than our current President it is a vote on principals not on prejudice as liberals would like to falsely claim. A vote for overturning the Maryland "Dream Act" is a vote for the children of legal tax paying citizens of Maryland and for enforcing the laws that already exist regarding illegal immigration. A vote for overturning the gay marriage bill is a vote for the separation of church and state and, for some people, it is a vote for taking the issue back to the General Assembly so they can pass a properly written bill providing for legal civil unions, such as the bill submitted by Republican Sen. Allan Kittleman that actually provided more rights for gay couples than the bill that was passed currently provides and did not encroach upon the religious side of the issue by including the word marriage.

But at least you got the ethnic heritage of the President right. He truly is an African American and not just an American like, Dr. Martin Luther King, Justice Thurgood Marshal, Secretary Colin Powell, Congressman Allan West, Lt. Governor Michael Steele, Bill Cosby, Ray Lewis, or Darius Rucker.

A couple of thoughts here on your slightly biased remarks that contain a touch of racism. Your sarcasm is reflective of your inner thoughts often being used in destructive ways.

I have noticed in previous debates with you, when challenged on a specific issue you suddenly disappear because your lack of facts do not support you conclusion. It's hard to comprise a retort attempting to justify 2 + 2 = 5.

If you evaluate your comment, you base intelligence with either being conservative or liberal. FOX is conservative, NBC is liberal. By what study is your assumption based on? For the record FOX is number one NBC is near the bottom.

For example - the term anarchists - refers to a violent group on the left. There are white supremacists groups on the right. I'm quite sure there are some nut bags on both sides.

Are you suggesting everyone vote your way? Are you suggesting the law should have no baring on issues because of ideology?

I think you might want to stew just a little longer before you mix your brew, because I am intelligent and will respond in kind.

Your last sentence goes to the crux of this issue: " ... we are all probably sexual deviants." Now is that intelligent or what!

Thanks Buck. I'll be busy this weekend. Steve wants me to meet in in LA.
