Volunteer Today for Research for a Cancer-Free Tomorrow

Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) is coming to Carroll County in mid-March, including an enrollment site at Carroll Hospital Center on March 15 and 16. Every once in a while, over the course of our lives, something comes along that gives each of us a chance to do something really significant. CPS-3 is that opportunity in the battle against cancer! The American Cancer Society needs cancer fighters who are interested in enrolling in the study to help create a cancer-free world for future generations.

Fighting cancer is our mission at Carroll Regional Cancer Center. We have just broken ground on the hospital campus for the new William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art treatment center that will be a tremendous benefit for the community.

But just as important as cancer treatment is cancer prevention. Approximately 100 participants have already enrolled in CPS-3 in Carroll County, but we need the community's help to get to the goal of 425 participants. Nationwide, the study is recruiting 300,000 participants. I encourage Carroll County residents to step up and take part in this important study.

For each generation, the American Cancer Society conducts a Cancer Prevention Study (CPS). Each of these studies follows that generation so researchers can use the information and apply what they learn to the next generation to save more lives.

Caner Prevention Study-1 in the 1950s established the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. Cancer Prevention Study-2 showed the link between obesity and cancer risk. Together, the first two studies have revealed 500 new discoveries concerning cancer.

The study is recruiting adults ages 30 to 65 who have not been diagnosed wtih cancer (except basal and squamous cell skin cancer) and who are willing to make a long-term commitment to fill out surveys mailed to their home every few years.

To make an enrollment appointment, go to www.CPS3CarrollCounty.org. Enrollment takes place:

  • March 12 at M&T Bank in Mount Airy
  • March 13 at Four Seasons Sports Complex in Hampstead
  • March 14 at Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg
  • March 15 & 16 at Carroll Hospital Center (The Women's Place) in Westminster

Thank you for helping in the fight against cancer!
