The Maryland Science Center’s Backyard Science Days returns Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12 from 12-4 p.m. featuring Rob Mies, Director of the Organization for Bat Conservation, and flying, furry, fanged friends.

Rob’s performances explain the benefits these famed and feared winged wonders. Visitors will meet tiny fruit bats of Asia and Africa, North America’s Big Brown bat and even spend some quality time with Camilla, the Malaysian Flying Fox with a six-foot wingspan. Cameras will flash and eyes will widen as Rob brings his bats through the crowd, just inches from guests.

The Maryland Park Service’s Scales and Tales program will also be on hand with exciting, Maryland-native creatures including snakes, turtles and raptors (birds of prey). The Maryland Ornithological Society’s “study skins” of once-living birds will give visitors an appreciation for still-living members of the same species.

Families will design and race vegetables-on-wheels in the always-popular Veggie Racing, launch stomp rockets, make solar art and get crafty with the Maryland Native Plant Society.
