DESCRIPTION:Taking place  at Cockey's 216 East Main Street Westminster\, 
 Maryland 21157 410-848-6494\nJoin us for a fun filled event each month!\
 n\n&nbsp\;\nChildren from 3 to 6 years old will discover what  Carroll C
 ounty was like in the 1800s. They will travel back in time through  them
 ed stories\, songs and crafts or activities. This one hour program will 
 focus  on a different topic each month and will conclude with a craft or
  activity that  will reinforce the theme. Wendy Raith will be the instru
 ctor for each class.\n&nbsp\;\nClasses are the 3rd Saturday of each mont
 h from 10:00  a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Koontz-Yingling Learning Center 
 at Cockey's. For each  class\, there is a $5.00 charge and pre-registrat
 ion is required.\n&nbsp\;\nTo  develop their independence\, we suggest c
 hildren only during story time. Parents  and caregivers will rejoin the 
 child and assist with the craft or activity. Of  course\, everyone is we
 lcome to remain with the child for the story if you wish.  The accompany
 ing adult must remain on site during the one hour program. There  will b
 e a room available for adults to gather during the story time.\n&nbsp\;\

 various toys from the 1800s. Your child will be  able to play with diffe
 rent toys and create their very own to take home and  keep. After class\
 , you and your child can explore our Playthings of the  Past&nbsp\;exhib
 it in the first floor exhibit gallery.&nbsp\; You can also  check out th
 e variety of traditional toys in The Shop at  Cockey's. This class has a

 he past. Most  of these games are played through singing\, hand claps an

 ee Post Office/ Past and Present\nCarroll County had the first rural fre
 e delivery of mail.  The children will learn about past and present mail
  through stories\, songs and  role playing. They will create their own m
 ail bag and distribute the  mail.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;\nSaturday\, April 21\,

 ;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Memorial Day Parades\nWestminster has the honor of conti
 nuously hosting a  Memorial Day Parade longer than any other city in Ame
 rica.&nbsp\; Your child will  celebrate parades through music\, creativi
 ty and literature.&nbsp\; They will create a  flag that they will be abl
 e to wave at the Westminster Memorial Day parade on  May 28th.\n&nbsp\;\
 nSaturday\, June 16\, 2012&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; The Civil War Com
 es to  Westminster\nYour  child will learn the basics of the Civil War t
 hrough pictures\, stories and  creativity. They will make a clothespin s
 oldier to take home. The following  weekend is Westminster's Corbit's Ch
 arge Commemoration\, a living history  encampment commemorating the Batt
 le of Westminster in June 1863. What a great  tie in for the kids!\n&nbs
 p\;\nSaturday\, July 21\, 2012&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Everyday life in Carr
 oll  County in the 1800s\nYour  child will discover what life was like f
 or men\, women\, boys and girls on a farm  in the 1800s. Each person had
  a specific job or chore to do. They will follow up  with a tasting chal
 lenge.\n&nbsp\;\nSaturday\, August 18\, 2012&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
 &nbsp\;Food and Where To Find  It in the 1800s\nYour  child will explore
  the world of food and how to find it on a farm.&nbsp\; Jack wakes  up a
 nd asks his Mom for pancakes and then the food adventure begins in the b
 ook  Pancakes Pancakes by Eric Carle. They will make butter and eat it w
 ith  homemade bread.\n&nbsp\;\nSaturday\, September 15\, 2012&nbsp\;&nbs
 p\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Farming- Living with  Animals\nFarming is hard 
 work in Carroll County. Caring for the  animals and collecting all the f
 ood they provide is a big chore. Through music\,  stories and activities
 \, the children will experience this. They will bring home  a lift-the-d
 oor animal activity.\n&nbsp\;\nSaturday\, October 20\, 2012&nbsp\;&nbsp\
 ;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Mills - A Big Part  of
  Carroll County\nThere were many mills in this area. The most popular  w
 ould have been the grist mill that would have ground the wheat into flou
 r.  Children will experience the mill and how it works from the book The
  Little  Red Hen. They will create a wheat art project.\n&nbsp\;\nSaturd
 ay\, November 17\, 2012&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Native Americans in  Carroll Count
 y\nThere were not many Native Americans in Carroll County  but the child
 ren will be introduced to them through the book When the  Shadbush Bloom
 s. They will make a craft to take home.\n&nbsp\;\nSaturday\, December 15
 \,  2012&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Limestone Quarries in Carroll County\nTo  e
 nd the year\, we will discuss the various limestone quarries in the area
 .  Limestone is crushed and used for many different purposes. The childr
 en will  explore a quarry by building their own using rocks\, stones and
   trucks.
