Expert appraisers will offer verbal estimations of value for three items per participant. The cost to have items appraised is $20 for the first item, $10 for the second, and $5 for the third.

“It’s a great way to find out if something that is up in your attic, or something passed down to you by your grandmother, is worth thousands, or only has sentimental value,” said Diana Mills Scott, volunteer at The Shop at Cockey’s and author of The Forgotten Corner, A history of Oakland Mill.

A September 6 Carroll County Times article reported that the event is the Historical Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year and that this year they are hoping to raise more than $20,000.  According to the article they are expecting 150-175 people and will be giving estimates on everything from antique bicycles to paintings and coin collections.

While there is no promise that a person can sell an item for the exact amount it is appraised for, Scott explains that the appraisers are experts in their field and their estimation of an object is always highly interesting and valuable information.
