You're lookin' good, Maryland.

A newly released 2014 American State Litter Scorecard reveals the Old Line state ranks as the ninth cleanest state in the country, falling behind Iowa. Washington, California and Connecticut ranked as the cleanest U.S. states.

The scorecard was presented at the American Society for Public Administration Conference in March. According to the scorecard, states receive their ratings if they follow certain indicators including litter taxation, per person daily waste disposal by state, and percentage of "profiled litterers" per state, among other criteria.

Since 2008, the American State Litter Scorecard approximates a state’s overall public spaces and environmental quality condition "through tried-and-true, hard-to-obtain measures, resulting in a Score total for each and every state."

In 2011, Maryland was ranked the 12th cleanest state.

Here's how other U.S. states shaped up in this year's survey:

I've lived in Baltimore my entire 47 years (work and family keep me here....otherwise, I'd be long gone), but I've been all over the United States. Maryland is DEFINITELY NOT among the cleanest of states. Don't believe everything you read.
