Tech Camps for Kids in Westminster

The time has come to sign kids up for Summer Camp. Below are a few local camps that focus on science and technology.

Summer Camps are available in all different styles and themes.  Here, Patch has rounded up a variety of local technology-based camps available this year. 

Carroll Community College Summer Kids at Carroll – Kids camps will be available June 24-Aug. 9 for ages 4-15.  Available programs include technology, performance digital development, robotics, science and career exploration and many more. Below are summaries of a few of the technology related courses.  

Digital Kids:

  • FX: Science Behind Special Effects: Ages 8-11 will learn age-old scientific techniques used to create Hollywood ‘movie-magic’ including mechanical effects, green screens and computer generated imagery (CGI). / July 15-19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $180
  • Make Your First Video Game: Kids ages 8-11 are invited to design their very first 2-D game.  Kids will learn how to add graphics, music, sound, software, simple coding and more. No prior experience necessary.  Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac users can speak with the instructors at the first class. / June 24 – 28, 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. / $180
  • Virtual Worlds and Future Cities: Kids ages 8-11 are encouraged to design a virtual city that they imagine will exist in the year 2050. Campers are instructed to act as engineers and architects as they use design software to learn about scale, energy and city planning. Camper’s designs will be showcased on a special website at the end of the camp. / June 24-28, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $180

Scientific Kids:

  • Game Strategists: Kids ages 9-11 will learn how to look at board games from a strategic standpoint.  Kids will practice teamwork to explore new techniques and strategies that will keep them thinking. / July 1-5 (no camp 7/4), 1:15 – 4:15 / $115
  • Spy Codes and Ciphers: Ages 9-11 will learn about Morse code, Navajo code talkers and all about the mysteries of the Enigma machine.  Kids will learn about the history of coding as well as how to use their own codes to send secret messages. / July 15-19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $140.
  • Blood, Bones & Brains, Oh Boy: Kids ages 6-8 and 9-11 will learn all about the human body while making a working model of human longs, mapping the tongue’s taste buds, testing bacteria and more.  Kids will even perform a virtual heart transplant and virtual cow eye dissection. / Ages 6-8 - July 15-19, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / Ages 9-11 – July 15-19, 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. / $150
  • Super Science: Chemical Magic:  Kids 7-9 and 9-11 will practice “Harry-Potter style” ‘magical’ laboratory experiments.  Kids will make take-home flubber, a mushroom monster, silly putty, lava blobs and more.  Kids will learn about atoms, bonding, acids and bases, fire and ice reactions and more.  Kids will take home their own wizadry recipe booklet and mini chemistry set.  / Ages 9-11 - July 8-12, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / Ages 7-9 – July 8-12, 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. / Ages 9-11 – Aug. 5-9, 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. / $150.
  • Super Science: Physics, Flight & Rocketry:  Ages 9-11 will build and launch scale model rockets, planes and other flying gadgets.  They will build solar-powered cars, balloon vehicles, experiment with robotic flying insects and more. / July 22-26, 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. / $150

Technology Know-How Kids:

  • Beyond the Blocks: A hands-on electronics class for ages 9-11.  Kids will learn how electrical engineers solder circuits, light LED’s, Electrify motors and more. Kids will design and build an electronic creation to keep. / July 29-Aug. 2, 1:15 – 4:15 / $175.
  • Breaking Bricks: LEGO© Hacks and Mods: Kids ages 9-11 will learn how to fuse, cut and modify custom parts for a take-home project.  Kids will learn about tool use, hand skills and building creativity.  / June 24 – 28, 1:15 – 4:15 / July 29-Aug. 2, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $175.

Teen College: Digital Technology & Video Game Production

  • APP Attack: Ages 12-15 will learn to create their own mobile application or mobile game.  Teens will learn the basics of mobile app and game design as well as see firs-hand how the world of app publishing functions. / July 15-19, 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. / July 22-26, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $180
  • Web Site Design: Ages 12-15 will learn how to express themselves with a personal webpage.  They will learn about text, images, hyperlinks, flash features, multi-media elements and more.  Kids will learn how to get their website online and take it home at the end of the week. / July 22- 26, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $135

Teen College: Technology & Science

  • LEGO© Robotics: Bot Builders: Ages 12-15 will learn about robotics systems and will build and program a robot to use senses to solve various challenges.  / June 24 – 28, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / July 8 – 12, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / $145
