Westminster Couple Bought Winning $1 Million Powerball Ticket in Taneytown

The couple says they will use the money to help with retirement and their son's college fund.

A Westminster couple visited the Maryland Lottery headquarters Friday to claim their $1 million Powerball prize from last Saturday's drawing, according to Maryland Lottery officials.

The husband and wife team purchased their winning ticket while out bowling with friends at Thunderhead Bowl & Grill, 4337 Old Taneytown Road in Taneytown. The duo didn’t realize they won until well after the drawing, according to a Maryland Lottery news release.

“My sister called me at work because the bowling alley had sold a $1 million winner,” the woman said in a statement from the lottery. “I had the ticket with me so she read off the numbers.”

The heating company employee could barely contain her glee as her sister read off the numbers on her ticket.

The woman had to leave work to show her husband the ticket after he refused to believe her on the phone.

“We went shopping with a $1 million ticket in our wallet last week, worried about how much we were going to spend," the man said in the statement.

For now the couple plans to use their winnings to grow their retirement fund and to help with their high school-aged son’s college fund.

The second $1 million ticket was sold in Dundalk, according to the Maryland Lottery. There was no jackpot winner matching all six numbers.
