Westminster High Basketball Team Dedicates First Game to Critically Injured Alum

Emotions will run high for Westminster High School basketball players in their season opener Friday as they will be playing in honor of their friend and former team mate who was critically injured in a November car accident. 

Devan Curet, a 2013 Westminster High School graduate and former member of the boys basketball team, was critically injured in a two-vehicle car accident on Md. 482 on Nov. 13. He remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. 

According to a Caring Bridge website set up by Devan's family, Devan has had one leg amputated and has undergone dozens of surgeries to repair other life-threatening injuries sustained in the accident. 

Following the accident, members of the Westminster and the Westminster High School community took to social media with prayers and well wishes for Devan with the hashtag #prayfordevan. The Caring Bridge website the family uses to post updates on Devan has had more than 20,000 visits.

The Westminster High School boys basketball team will take on North Hagerstown at home at 7 p.m. Friday. A portion of the money collected at the gate will go directly to the Curet family to help with medical costs, according to Coach Steve Byrnes.

"Devan was part of our basketball family for four years and was a three-year starter on my varsity team," said Coach Byrnes. "Devan and his family were a big part of us and we want to be able to help them in any way we can."

If you can't make the game, there are other ways to support Devan and his family. The Devan Curet Fund has been set up at PNC Bank, 588 Jermor Ln. in Westminster. There is also a Facebook page to keep the community informed about other fundraisers.
