8 Autumn Adventures at Bear Branch Nature Center

Stars, bears, spiders and the moon -- all at Bear Branch Nature Center in October.

Here are some opportunities to get outside and enjoy autumn in Carroll County. These activities are scheduled at Bear Branch Nature Center, 300 John Owings Rd. in Westminster. 

Planetarium Show

  • Saturday, Oct 12, 7:30–8:30 p.m.
  • Join the Westminster Astronomical Society under the star dome to learn the stars and constellations of the night sky. Bring your own telescope or look through one of ours.
  • 8–adult
  • $8 fee

Bear Cubs Club
  • Thursday, Oct. 17, 10–11 a.m.
  • Your child will learn about the natural world through hikes, games, and stories. Encourage your young naturalist with our club!
  • Age 4–6
  • $7 fee

Junior Explorers
  • Thursday, Oct. 17, 2–3:30 p.m.
  • Through hikes and activities you can learn all about the world just outside your door. Children should be mature enough to attend the program on their own.
  • Age 6–8 
  • $7 fee

All About Nature for Homeschoolers
  • Friday, Oct 18, 2–3:30 p.m.
  • Through hikes and activities, you can learn all about the world just outside your door! Children should be mature enough to attend the program on their own.
  • Age 9–11
  • $7 fee

The Full Hunter's Moon
  • Friday, Oct. 18, 7–8:30 p.m.
  • Fall is a time for harvest and preparation for winter. Explore fields, woods, and meadows by the light of the full moon. Look for nocturnal animals and learn more about how animals survive at night.
  • Age 6–adult
  • $7 fee

Web Weavers
  • Saturday, Oct. 26, 2–3 p.m.
  • Spiders are amazing creatures! Find out more about them as we meet some beautiful spiders and make a fun spider craft to take home.
  • Age 5–7
  • $8 fee

Seed Search
  • Sunday, Oct. 27, 1-3 p.m.
  • Help us, in conjunction with the Potomac Conservancy, collect seeds, acorns and nuts from trees in the park. They will be used for planting and reforestation efforts across the state of Maryland.
  • Age 8-adult (12 and under must be accompanied by an adult)

Preschool Creepy Critter Party
  • Wednesday, October 30, 10:30–11:30 a.m.
  • Join us for some spooky fun. Meet some creepy critters and make a cool craft to take home. Enjoy some treats, too. Don’t forget to wear your Halloween costume!
  • Age 3–5
  • $8 fee
