Festival of Wreaths at Carroll Arts Center

The 14th Annual Festival of Wreaths will be on display at the Carroll Arts Center through Dec. 4.

The Arts Council is currently home to 220 custom made holiday wreaths. They are made of everything from stone to paper to mirrors, each with a unique theme and many adorned with special gifts.

The 14th Annual Festival of Wreaths offers community members a chance to bid on these festive holiday decorations and to vote on their favorite wreaths. The silent auction closes at 4 p.m. Dec. 4 and high bidders must be present to win. Proceeds benefit Arts Council programs and events.

"This year the festival has a little more artiness about it," said Susan Williamson, the visual art director for the Carroll County Arts Council. "There's several in here, more than several, that are real works of art. We have more paintings and sculptural forms than we've had in the past, we even have a mobile this year."

Williamson said that this year the wreath makers outdid themselves in being creative and purposeful.

"I think people try to outdo their own personal best each year," Williamson said. "We see people who enter a wreath each year and each one is the better than the last. This year people just went above and beyond their own personal best to create."

The festival is located in several rooms thoughout the Arts Center on 91 West Main Street, including the Tevis Gallery.

"I'm thrilled to see the art of the wreath in this festival," Williamson said. "I think there are some incredible ones (wreaths). It stretches people."

Williamson, who herself has a wreath on display in the festival, said she's already thinking about what she will create for next year.

"I'm getting inspired as to what I'm going to do next year. I can guarantee that eight out of 10 artists that created a work for this year's festival, already know sort-of, kind-of what they are going to do next year," Williamson said.

The Festival of Wreaths is open to the public and free. Visit www.carrollcountyartscouncil.org for more information.
