ALDI Grocery Store to Open Friday

The Westminster ALDI will officially open Friday.

On Friday, Oct. 26, ALDI will officially open in the former Superfresh location at 401 Englar Rd.

With more than 1,200 stores in 32 states, ALDI promotes itself as carrying high-quality grocery items at unbeatable prices, according to a news release.

“We are pleased to bring our first store to Westminster to help customers get high-quality products at everyday low prices,” said Jeff Baehr, Frederick division vice president for ALDI, in a statement.

To celebrate the opening of its first Westminster store, ALDI will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. Community members are invited to join ALDI executives and city officials to tour the new store, sample ALDI exclusive brands and enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to be one of five winners of an “ALDI Exclusive Game Day Tailgating Kit,” including ALDI gift certificates, according to a news release.

ALDI eliminates overhead costs, which according to a news release allows the store to discount products, with services such as a cart rental system through which shoppers insert a quarter to release a cart and receive the quarter back upon the cart’s return. Other cost-saving practices include a smaller store footprint, open carton displays and encouragement of customers to bring their own shopping bags.

According to a news release, ALDI also saves shoppers money by keeping stores open during prime shopping times. The new Westminster location will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. ALDI accepts cash, debit and EBT cards.

ALDI opened 75 stores in the United States in 2011 and plans to open more than 80 stores in 2012 according to a release.
