Mold Leads Chobani to Recall Greek Yogurt

Chobani, Inc. has recalled many of its Greek yogurt products after mold was reportedly found in some of its shipments.

In a letter on the company’s website, founder Hamdi Ulukaya said the mold was in products that were shipped from the company’s Idaho facility. Those shipments were distributed nationwide, according to the FDA.

According to the FDA, the Idaho-based company has stopped distributing the yogurt after people reported the product containers were “bloating and swelling,” and some people reported illness.

According to a statement from the company, the affected products have already been pulled from grocery store shelves and made up less than 5 percent of total production.  

The problem was first reported on the Chobani website on August 31. The voluntary recall, in concert with the FDA, was announced Thursday, Sept. 5.

The affected products carry the code 16-012 and have expiration dates marked "9/11/2013"  to  "10/7/2013."
