Vacancy: What do You Want Here?

This building that used to house the Westminster Inn and East End Athletic Club would make a great ... you fill in the blank!

Westminster has a lot of great businesses, but is there anything missing? A certain type of establishment or a new store?

Built as a school in the late 1800's, the building at the corner of Center and Green Streets became popular as the Westminster Inn and restaurant in the 1990's.

purchased the building for $1 million in 2007 with the intent to turn it into a state of the art child care facility and workout center. Those plans fell through and even though the Y is currently using the building to house some offices, they say the building is still for sale.

What do you think would be perfect in that location, in the heart of downtown Westminster? Tell us what you'd like to see at this location in the comment section below.

This would be ideal for all the City of Westminster offices and eliminate excessive rents they are now paying.

It should be used for various vendors. Maybe a a fruit stand/ farmer's market, another antique mall for this side of town, a crafty mall for local artists, or a health center with various gyms, holistic venues and yoga.

How about a community run homeless shelter? It used to be a gym so showers exist; local builders could renovate the interior to create private rooms, a community kitchen, laundry room and part of the gym could be kept as is. Offices could be built for resource research with computers where local businesses could post job openings or hold interviews. If we pulled our resources asking all who can to give in skills (construction and architectural), materials (84 Lumber, Lowes, Home Depot) and elbow grease could provide help and a safe place for those much less fortunate. The recent events in Westminster highlighted our homeless issue-a possible opportunity to handle two issues with one solution?

Bed & breakfast only. A nice place to hold weddings, bar mitzvas, etc.

I like that...you could have contractors create an apprentiseship program for the homeless or jobless to develop skills while doing the work needed to the building..

Affordable housing units, similar to that of the Residences at the Hampstead School (which once served as elementary school and high school). The conversation of the old Hampstead school into affordable housing units for seniors was made possible through a formal collaboration between Interfaith Housing Alliance, Carroll County Government, a regional private development/investment corporation, along with HUD grant.

Another Inn, with first class cuisine and service. Consider the Amtrim Hotel in Taneytown as a model.

Something for teens...there's nothing for teens to do in this Town except go to the Mall and roam the streets looking for trouble. That building would be great for teen dances, performing arts, rec center, endless activities. Maybe if teens had something to do they'd stay off drugs and alcohol. Im not sure how it would be funded....memberships, admission to the dances?? Staffed by Parent volunteers, community...I dont know, I just know I have 3 teenagers in my family that need something to do with their free time!
