Scots Invade Mount Airy Town Council Meeting

Members of the St. Andrew's Society of Mid-Maryland addressed the Mt. Airy Town Council dressed in Scottish and Viking regalia.

Mount Airy, MD - A strange sight was seen at the March Mount Airy Town Council meeting, as several folks dressed in Scottish and Viking regalia invaded to address the council.

The group, from the St. Andrew’s Society of Mid-Maryland, lined the wall as their President, Joe Wiggington, spoke to the council about the society’s annual Frederick Celtic Festival.

Wiggington encouraged local businesses to sponsor the festival, saying, “Let those businesses who averted our eyes last year be on notice: No more Mr. Nice Laddie” and emphasized that the festival brings many people to the area, creating revenue for local businesses.  More than 5,000 people participated in 2012’s festival, with the society planning for 7,500 to 10,000 participants in 2013.

The Festival is being held on May 11 at the Mount Airy Fire Department Carnival Grounds.  It celebrates Celtic culture, featuring bands, dancing, demonstrations, and Highland Games events.

This year the festival is partnering with the Wounded Warrior Project and Operation Ward 57, both charities that benefit wounded veterans.  There will be a concert the night of the festival where 100% of ticket sales go towards the charities.  Wiggington also announced that some wounded warriors would be taking the field alongside the professional and amateur Highlander athletes for the athletic events during the festival.

Wiggington thanked Mount Airy for playing host to the festival for the past two years and rallied people to come out, swearing, “On the souls of their Ancestors that all who come will not soon forget the time spent on yonder field.  We promise fun for the entire family.”
