Blog: Immunizations for Me?

August is Immunization Awareness Month and adults need to be aware of recommended immunizations. The list of immunization should be reviewed by you and your physician each year.

I received a postcard from my veterinarian last week reminding me that my dog, Molly, is due for her yearly vaccines.  It got me thinking, when was the last time I updated my immunization?  Am I even due for any immunizations? Why doesn't my doctor send me cute postcards reminding me that I am overdue for my shots?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov) adults do have a need for immunizations after we turn 18.  Here is a list of recommended immunizations:

Influenza (flu shot): Yearly for everyone.

Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap):  Booster every 10 years.

Varicella (chickenpox):  If you have never had chicken pox or shingles this is the immunization for you.  It is a series of 2 shots with no booster required.

Human papillomavirus (HPV):  Recommended immunization completion of 3 doses by age 26.

Zoster (shingles):  Recommended at age 60 or older regardless of whether individual has reported shingles in the past.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR):  If received during  1963-1967, work in health care related profession or are child bearing age, should have blood tested for immunity and receive additional immunization if required.  Pre-college immunization is also recommended.

Pneumoccocal:  One time immunization at age 65.  If the vaccine is received due to medical conditions prior to age 65 then a repeat dose is recommended if it has been more than 5 years.

Meningococcal:  Recommended for first time college students and people traveling to foreign countries.

There are other vaccines that may be recommended based on your social and medical history.  Please see your physician to discuss any and all vaccines that may be required.

So as we schedule our kids back to school physicals, and in my case our animals annual visit, don’t forget about YOURSELF!
