Ready for Hurricane Sandy? Or Prepared for Sandy?

Safety, preparing, hurricane Sandy

Ready for Hurricane Sandy? Or Prepared for Sandy? Carroll County, MD

Ready for Hurricane Sandy? Or Prepared for Sandy? Carroll County, MD Most people in Maryland are concerned to some extent about what Sandy will actually bring, what damage she will cause and how long it will take to get services restored. That’s the million dollar question of the day. With all the sophisticated equipment we have available to us, all we really know for sure is, it’s going to be BAD.

The advanced notice can should be used to our (those in the path of any natural disasters) advantage. Thinking outside the box isn't a bad idea either. I've had plenty of time for thinking as I watch weather reports and prepare. Ok, lanterns are dusted off and fresh batteries are added, check. Vehicles are topped off with fuel & back up cans are filled, check. Necessities have been purchased, check, tub filled with water along with all the pitchers and empty gallon containers I can get my hands on, check. The lawn/yard furniture and decorations have been secure, check, all the dishes and laundry are clean down to the bed sheets, check, windows have all been checked for a tight seal, check.  We raided the camping gear, what a treasure trove of equipment and experience we have to draw from! (Thanks Cub Scouts!)

Now, we wait? Hmmm, there must be something else we can do to prepare? Days without power, what will we need what can we do to help aid in our survival, comfort and reduce stress. So I put on my camping hat so to speak, I'm thinking food safety, personal hygiene and keeping us warm and dry. Now it’s easy! One of the first things I would do when we would go camping is set up a hand and dish washing station. Hand Soap, dish soap, towels and clean water.  Done! Next, we decided to cook the meats on hand for dinners for the next few days. Cooked food is less fragile than raw food. Good idea, cook it, freeze it and it will save in meal prep, help keep the temperature of the cooler down and save on cooking fuel and exposure since we'll have to cook outside.
