A Stone’s Throw: New Oxford, PA

New Oxford offers old town charm and beauty, just 40 minutes from Westminster

According to the New Oxford Chamber of Commerce, New Oxford got it’s name from an ox-head sign at an old inn in town.  Also known as "The Little Town with the Beautiful Circle”, New Oxford’s focal point is a quaint circle containing shops, restaurants, and homes dating back to the 18th and 19th century.

Patch has a few suggestions for activities during your visit to New Oxford.

Gray Wolf Plantation:  The drive from the main road to the plantation is reminiscent of scenes from "Gone with the Wind”--a long and windy road lined with trees eventually reveals the plantation across a reflective pond. Rows of corn, pumpkins, and apple orchards, currently in season, surround the grounds as well.

Gray Wolf Plantation is known for growing pre-Civil War antique apple varieties, including: York, Winesap, Smokehouse, Northern Spy, and Cortland, to name a few.

The plantation also sells pumpkins and gourds in season.  Check out their website for times and additional information.

Golden Lane Antique Gallery:  I know, you’re thinking, “it’s just another antique store in PA”…not so.  First, the shop is more like a museum, three floors and 30,000 square feet big.  You can spend hours walking through this place. Once a shoe factory, it is now a virtual showcase of historical items from every corner of the U.S.

In addition to your traditional antiques, the Golden Lane boasts of having the largest collection of fine art in Central Pennsylvania. Artist's work on display include, but are not limited to; Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse.

Second, the shop offers the “Ghost of Golden Lane Live Paranormal Tours”.  A dedicated room in the basement of the gallery serves as the investigation hot spot for ghost hunting, equipped with infrared cameras and other ghost hunting equipment.

According to the owner, many spirits roam about in the building and have been caught on the numerous cameras set up throughout the gallery. Tours are on Thursdays and Sundays, reservations are required.

Numerous diners and restaurants can be found in New Oxford, here are just a few dining options for your visit:

Pizza Garden:  A hometown favorite “joint” serving pizza with dough made from scratch, available with a wide variety of toppings. Customers are free to design their own pizzas. Subs and a wide selection of appetizers such as cheese sticks with Italian sauce are also served. Pizza Garden is located in walking distance from the main circle in town. Eat in or carry out are available.

Rosie’s Restaurant:  Full of local color, Rosie’s is an old fashioned restaurant which serves homemade breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu of this family-operated restaurant offers American, diner style, dishes at economical prices.  The homemade desserts are a must, so leave room.
