A Stone’s Throw: New Windsor, MD

Just thirty minutes from downtown Westminster, New Windsor offers a quiet day out in a town drenched in history and charm.

New Windsor is a quaint town lined with Victorian houses that have corner bell towers and ornate trim work. A short walk through town and you will see hints of a simpler life dating back to the 1800s.

Although New Windsor is a quiet town, there are many things to do; we’ve outlined a few suggestions for you.

Strawbridge Shrine: While visiting the Strawbridge Shrine in New Windsor, you will learn that it was the site of the first Methodist Society and the home of the first American to convert to the Methodist religion.

Tours of the property include visiting the Strawbridge Farmhouse, The John Evans House, the Log Meeting House Replica, and assorted Farm Buildings containing vintage farm machinery. The grounds are open to roam freely at any time. However visiting the inside of the structures should be arranged by contacting the curator, who also lives on the grounds.

Walking Tours: The New Windsor Heritage Foundation has designed a walking tour of historic New Windsor. The foundation also runs the New Windsor Museum and the Fountain Shoppe. This is a great place to start your visit.

The Museum also has exhibits and an archive room, which is open to the public. Maps of the walking tours can be picked up at the museum or downloaded in PDF form from the Heritage Foundation website.

SERRV: Shopping here is like taking a short jaunt around the globe.  SERRV is a nonprofit, fair-trade organization, whose mission is to erase poverty around the world. The organization accomplishes that mission by purchasing overseas products and marketing them in the United States.

You can shop at SERRV for unique handcrafts including jewelry, home décor and items made from recycled materials. The onsite cafe sells coffee, chocolate, and snacks from every corner of the world.
