Beyond the pleasure of shopping, the buildings are a beauty to behold. The outside structure has maintained most of the look of the original mill, except for the addition of courtyards and a few brick outbuildings. Walking through the main building of shops, you’ll feel the creak of the large wooden planks beneath your feet, while admiring the antiquity of the large ceiling beams overhead.

Tours highlighting the historic operations of Savage Mill are available weekdays only for groups of six or more by prior reservation.

Savage Mill Trail
This trail begins just outside the mill and runs along a scenic section of the Patuxent River. Offering a flat and shady path, this trail is ideal for walkers and bicyclists alike.

Adjacent to the trail is the Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge. According to Wikipedia, this bridge is the “sole surviving example of a revolutionary design in the history of American bridge engineering”.  The bridge, along with the mill is on the National Register of Historic Places.

So you’ve worked up an appetite?  We have a few suggestions on places to get a good bite to eat:

The Ram’s Head Tavern:  You actually have three options for dining with Rams Head; Rams Head Tavern, Rams Head Restaurant, and the Rams Head Ratskeller. Each venue offers a casual dining atmosphere for family dining or just meeting up for drinks with friends.

The tavern is located in the Savage Mill Complex, which is easily accessible while shopping at the mill.

Bonaparte Breads: This small cafe and bakery is perfect for a quick afternoon lunch. Bonaparte Breads serves authentic French breads and pastries, along with coffee, soups and sandwiches. You can dine inside the café or enjoy the day outside on the patio in the courtyard.

Ma's Kettle: A favorite of locals, Ma’s Kettle serves home-style food in a humble atmosphere. Specialties include barbeque, ribs and hand carved turkey sandwiches, followed by homemade cakes and cobblers for dessert.
