Carroll County Agencies Receive $104,000 in United Way Impact Grants

Three local nonprofits have been awarded United Way grants in 2014.

Three Carroll County nonprofits will receive a combined $104,000 in grant funding from the United Way of Central Maryland in 2014.

The United Way's Community Impact Grants focus on advancing education, income and health for impoverished residents -- a population that, according to the United Way, will be among those most impacted by federal sequestration.

While Carroll County is ranked in the top 50 wealthiest counties in the U.S., the cost of housing makes it difficult for many low-income earners to stay afloat, according to a United Way news release. In fact, homelessness in the county increased by more than 20 percent during the last two years data has been collected, according to the Point-In-Time Surveys reported by Continuums of Care.

An additional $22,000 will be available to Carroll County nonprofits throughout the year in response to urgent, unforeseen challenges in the form of Community Response Grants.

Last year, 15 Carroll County nonprofits received Community Response Grants.

“With many in Carroll County struggling to provide the basics for their families, we took a holistic approach to funding the spectrum of essential human services,” UWCM’s Carroll County Community Partnership Board chair and director of finance for Knorr Brake Corporation, David Moore said in a statement. “Our funding decisions reflect the core needs of low-income families, and ensure that a network of resources exists locally.”

Region-wide, United Way of Central Maryland received requests for more than $12.4 million, and approved $2.7 million in community impact funding for health and human service programs across central Maryland, according to a news release.

“The funding provided by United Way of Central Maryland allows us to provide shelter services to our area’s at-risk and low-income residents – including families who may otherwise be split up,” said Cindy Parr, executive director of Human Services Programs of Carroll County.

“Achieving stability and self-sufficiency is nearly impossible without a home, but there are other key ingredients to overcoming poverty. By addressing the issues of financial stability, health and education, United Way is enabling real change here in Carroll County," Parr said in a statement.

In 2014, the following organizations will receive United Way grants:

  • Access Carroll County ($30,000): To support the Family Dental Clinic
  • Carroll Child Care Center ($10,000): To support child care costs
  • Human Services Programs of Carroll County ($64,000): To support the shelter services for women and children, and intact families.
