Carroll County Awarded Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Funds

Carroll County has been chosen to receive $17,385 in federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs, according to a county government news release. Local agencies that provide emergency food and shelter services are urged to apply for the funds.

The decision to provide funding to the county was made by a national board chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The board was charged with distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

The Carroll County Circle of Caring/Homelessness Board will determine how the local award will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies, according to the release. Qualifying agencies can apply to receive funds.

The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive the funds and any additional money made available under that phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

• be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government.
• be eligible to receive federal funds.
• have an accounting system.
• practice nondiscrimination.
• have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and
• if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

Carroll County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds previously to agencies that assisted with utilities, rent, and meals for county residents. The deadline for applications to be received is Jan. 18, 2013. No late applications will be accepted.
