Carroll County was the birthplace of Francis Scott Key.

It turns out that the man who wrote and composed our country's national anthem, Francis Scott Key, was born 1779, right in here Carroll County.
Key was born to Ann Phoebe Penn Dagworthy (Charlton) and Captain John Ross Key at the family plantation in Terra Rubra, located in what is now Keysville, Md., according to the National Registry of Historic Places.

The home was passed down through three generations, from Francis' grandfather Phillip, to John Ross, before it entered Francis' dominion.
Though the original structure of the Key family estate has deteriorated, a new Fedral-style house was built in 1850 and was placed under the U.S National Register of Historic Places.
