East Main Street Reopened After BGE Finds, Repairs Gas Pressure Problem

Homes and businesses in the area of East Main Street were evacuated and the road closed Monday as BGE officials investigated a possible gas leak.

People in the area of East Main Street reported smelling odors of gas Monday.

Rachael Lighty of BGE said at approximately 10 a.m. Monday, BGE observed higher than normal operating pressures in its gas distribution system in the E. Main Street area of Westminster due to an issue with a piece of equipment.

Properly functioning gas safety regulators would have vented excess gas, according to Lighty, which  may have resulted in the odor of gas.

As a precaution, a three block radius around E. Main Street was evacuated and the system was checked, Lighty said in a statement. The equipment was repaired, pressures were returned to normal and as of 3 p.m. Monday, all evacuated residents were cleared to return to their homes or businesses.

Any customers who smell gas or who have gas appliances that are not operating correctly should contact BGE from a safe location at 1.800.685.0123.
