Hair Ball Benefits Breast Cancer Patients, Honors Friend

The 7th Annual Hair Ball on Oct. 15 will raise money for the Stacey Davis Breast Cancer Fund, which supports women and families fighting breast cancer right here in Carroll County.

A couple hundred people will gather at Martin's in Westminster Oct. 15 to partake in an evening of fun and charity with dinner, an open bar, entertainment and a silent auction.

The 7th Annual Hair Ball will not only raise money to support people in Carroll County who are fighting breast cancer and their caregivers, but it will also honor the life of Stacey Lynn Woods Davis.

The proceeds of the Hair Ball, totalling more than $350,000 since its inception, will benefit The Stacey Davis Breast Cancer Fund.

According to the organization's founder Dawn DeMario, the purpose of The Stacey Davis Breast Cancer Fund is to perpetuate the character, ideals, and goals of Stacey Davis, by providing financial resources to breast cancer patients in Carroll County who are in need of assistance. DeMario was a close friend of Stacey Davis.

Support might include grants for uncovered medical expenses, supplies, prostheses, and travel related expenses for the patient, family, or unrelated caregiver to and from treatment centers.  At the sole discretion of the Grant Review Committee, funds may also be expended for projects that will comfort, support, or improve the quality of life for women living with Breast Cancer.

Dawn DeMario established the fund in 2005 in memory of Stacey Lynn Woods Davis. DeMario said Stacey Davis was a dedicated, loving and committed mother, wife and friend.

Stacey married Aaron Davis in 1987 and became a mother to three boys, Stephen, Michael and Christian.  The fund's literature states that she was a stay-at-home mother until her death in 2002, and that she was the mom that all of her friends aspired to be.

Stacey was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2000 and immediately had radical bi-lateral mastectomies. Once she recovered from the surgery, she began chemotherapy which was followed by radiation therapy.  Stacey suffered serious relapse when cancer cells were found in her spinal fluid.  She endured months of additional chemotherapy and radiation before passing away on Oct. 11, 2002, when she was 38 years old, according to a news release.

Each year the Hair Ball is held on the 3rd Saturday of October as a celebration of the life of Stacey Davis.

Tickets are still available for the Hair Ball and there are other ways to get involved including buying raffle tickets for a day at the spa (for two). For more information about the Hair Ball or the Stacey Davis Breast Cancer Fund, call 410-871-0023  or visit www.thespaatroopsmill.com.
