What to Do When It Rains

Don't fret the rain and the clouds in the forecast this week—enjoy your last days of summer by checking out these fun Westminster activities suited especially for those rainy days.

With the extended forecast set for rain or clouds throughout the week, here are five things to do in Westminster that won’t leave you all wet.

Check Out Some Art: Unfortunately it’s true—not much in life is free. However, this rainy day activity is one of those rare exceptions. Check out the Ninth Annual Members Show exhibition currently on display at the The Carroll Arts Center. More than 150 works of art from mixed media to photography, derived from the center’s many talented member artists, are on display at the center’s two galleries.
The Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St. Mon.-Wed., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thurs., 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.410-848-7272. carrollcountyartscouncil.org.

Travel To Kenya: Not many people have the money during this economic downturn to travel to exotic places. But during the Carroll County Public Library’s “Around the World” program, this week your family can travel to Kenya without having to spend all that dough. Journey the globe without leaving the library with African stories and crafts. Other places visited in the program’s past include China and France. The activity is suited best for children ages 7-10.
Wed., 1 p.m. 50 E. Main St. 410-386-4490. library.carr.org.

Enjoy an Evening Story: Story time doesn’t have to be done in the confines of one's bedroom. Join others in the fun by visiting the Carroll Count Public Library’s zoo-themed story hour that’s open to all ages, and introduces stories through books, songs and activities.
Tues., 7 p.m. 50 E. Main St.410-386-4490. library.carr.org.

Learn Local History: Did you know that the Pennsylvania German population was a significant force in the area in the early nineteenth century? Learn about such local history by visiting The Historical Society of Carroll County. Its Sherman-Fisher-Shellman House, built in 1807, has been renovated to display the daily activities of a family of Pennsylvania Germans. Public tours of the house are available Wednesday and Friday. Or check out the society’s research library and its Shriver-Weybright Exhibition Gallery, which houses many local artifacts. Or visit the Shop at Cockeys to buy your own local treasures.
Shriver-Weybright Exhibition Gallery, Tues-Fri., 12:30-4:30 p.m.
The Shop at Cockey’s, Tues.-Sat., 10a.m.-4 p.m.
The Sherman-Fisher-Shellman House, tours by appointment.  210 E. Main St., 410-848-6494. hscc.carr.org.
