Marine from Westminster Killed in Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. James M. Malachowski, 25, of Westminster died in combat.

The Department of Defense announced today that Staff Sgt. James M. Malachowski, 25, of Westminster, died March 20 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. 

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Baltimore Sun referenced a 2009 article in Carroll magazine which stated that Malachowski was previously an instructor in marksmanship and martial arts at Parris Island. According to the magazine, he enlisted at age 17 and served tours in Iraq in 2004 and 2005.

The Baltimore Sun also reported that Malachowski's mother, Alison Malachowski, is a retired Marine, and his sister, Brandy Malachowski, served in Iraq as an Army lieutenant.
